Enduring Hidden Love

בפסוק כל נדיב לבו יביאה את תרומת ה' כו'.
“In the verse: ‘Everyone whose heart motivates him shall bring the offering of God…’”
The Sefat Emet opens by examining the verse about the contributions to the Mishkan.
דאיתא במדרש מים רבים לא יוכלו לכבות כו' האהבה כו' בני עשו לי יריעות עזים ושכנתי בתוכם כו'.
“As it is stated in the Midrash: ‘Many waters cannot extinguish… the love… the children made for Me curtains of goats’ hair, and I dwelled among them.’”
The Midrash connects the enduring love between God and Israel to the creation of the Mishkan.
והענין הוא כי האהבה והדביקות אשר קיבלו בנ"י בהר סיני הוא חי וקיים לעולם.
“And the idea is that the love and attachment which Israel received at Sinai is alive and enduring forever.”
Revelation created an eternal inner bond between God and Israel.
אבל ע"י החטא אינם יכולין להוציא מכח אל הפועל אהבה הגנוזה.
“But through sin they are unable to actualize the hidden love.”
Sin blocks the expression of the inner love, though the love itself remains.
ולכן אחר החטא הוצרכו לזו הנדבה.
“Therefore, after the sin, they required this offering.”
The donations to the Mishkan served as a corrective channel.
שבכח התרומה הזו הוציאו הנדיבות והתשוקה והדביקות מכח אל הפועל עד שהמשיכו את השכינה למטה.
“For through this contribution they brought generosity, yearning, and attachment from potential into actuality until they drew the Shekhinah downward.”
Giving activated their inner spiritual capacities and invited Divine presence.
ולכן נק' משכן העדות שהוא עדות שהשכינה שורה בישראל.
“Therefore it is called the ‘Mishkan of Testimony,’ for it testifies that the Shekhinah dwells among Israel.”
The Mishkan is tangible proof of restored Divine intimacy.
ובזמן המשכן והמקדש הי' באמת השראת השכינה.
“And in the time of the Mishkan and the Temple there truly was Divine indwelling.”
During those eras, the indwelling was manifest and revealed.
ומה זו עדות.
“And what is this testimony?”
He raises the question of its deeper meaning.
רק שהוא עדות גם לכל הדורות.
“It is testimony also for all generations.”
The Mishkan testifies eternally, not only historically.
שאעפ"י שאין הקדושה בהתגלות.
“Even though the holiness is not revealed.”
In later times, Divine presence is concealed.
מ"מ בפנימיות לבות בנ"י נשאר רושם הקדושה.
“Nevertheless, in the inner hearts of Israel the imprint of holiness remains.”
The inner sanctity implanted at Sinai persists always.
ובאמת בכל המצות הוא כן אשר הם עצות איך להוציא הנדיבות והרצון מהכח אל הפועל כמ"ש כאן כל נדיב לבו כו'.
“And indeed this is true of all the commandments, which are counsels for bringing generosity and will from potential into actuality, as it says here: ‘Everyone whose heart motivates him…’”
Mitzvot function as tools to activate latent spiritual desire.
פי' שהתרומה זו הוציאה כל הנדיבות והרצונות שהיו טמונים בלבותם.
“Meaning: this contribution brought forth all the generosity and desires that were hidden in their hearts.”
The act of giving revealed dormant holiness.
כן כל מצות שנקראות נר כמ"ש נר מצוה וכתיב נר ה' כו' חופש כל חדרי בטן.
“So too all commandments, which are called ‘a lamp,’ as it is written: ‘A commandment is a lamp,’ and ‘The lamp of God searches all the chambers of the belly.’”
Mitzvot illuminate the inner recesses of the soul.
ויכולין להעלות כל הרצונות לה' ע"י המצות.
“And they can elevate all desires to God through the commandments.”
Mitzvot transform human intention into Divine connection.
ומלאכת המשכן הי' עדות על כל הדורות להודיע שאעפ"י שהחטא מבדיל מ"מ לא יוכל לכבות האהבה כנ"ל.
“And the labor of the Mishkan was testimony for all generations, to make known that although sin creates separation, it can never extinguish the love, as above.”
The Mishkan proclaims that Divine love outlasts human failure.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the Mishkan and the offerings for it served to actualize the eternal inner love between God and Israel, a love that survives sin and is awakened through mitzvot in every generation.
