Sanctifying Creation Through Torah

Vayakhel · תרמ"ט (1888) · Essay 2

Torah · Israel · Creation · Mishkan · Divine Presence

In the Midrash: “Lift your eyes upward,” etc.

The Sefat Emet opens by invoking the Midrash that urges Israel to lift their eyes and recognize the divine source of creation.

“Through the merit of ‘These are the names…,’ and ‘These are the statutes….’”

The Midrash connects the sustaining of the world to both Torah (the statutes) and Israel (the names), each carrying unique covenantal merit.

For the purpose of the world’s creation was for His glory, blessed be He.

The Sefat Emet states the ultimate aim of creation: to reveal divine glory.

As our sages said: for the sake of the Torah, called “first,” and for the sake of Israel, also called “first.”

Both Torah and Israel are foundational to creation, each described as “first,” implying that the world was formed in order to manifest their spiritual mission.

For Israel, through the power of Torah, testify to and clarify His governance of the world.

The Sefat Emet emphasizes that Israel’s primary role is to reveal God’s ongoing guidance within creation.

And this is what upholds the world.

The world stands only through this continual testimony and spiritual clarification.

As stated in the aforementioned Midrash: through the merit of Israel and the Torah.

Both Israel and Torah actively sustain creation.

But Israel must clarify this each day and testify to Him, as in “Hear O Israel,” whose initials spell “Lift your eyes upward.”

The daily recitation of Shema renews the testimony of divine unity and providence.

For Israel was given wisdom and knowledge to elevate creation and attach it to its upper root.

Israel’s spiritual capacities enable them to uplift the material world and reconnect it with its divine source.

And this was the essence of the Mishkan’s construction, which encompassed all the works of creation.

The Mishkan is presented as a microcosm of the entire cosmos.

Thus the Sages said: Bezalel knew how to combine the letters with which heaven and earth were created.

Bezalel’s wisdom mirrored the creative process itself, enabling him to build a sanctuary aligned with cosmic structure.

And so it is written: “See, the Lord has called by name,” meaning God gave him knowledge to connect the lower realms with their upper root.

Bezalel’s divinely bestowed “name” signifies a spiritual role: uniting heaven and earth through the Mishkan.

For “calling” implies appointing, as in “God called the light Day”—He assigned the light its function.

The Sefat Emet explains that “calling by name” means designating a spiritual task.

“To all of them He calls by name”—this refers to the Torah, which is entirely composed of the Names of the Holy One.

The Torah embodies divine naming, meaning divine essence and purpose.

And just as through Torah Israel testifies that God created heaven and earth,

So too the Mishkan functions as a living testimony.

So it was in the work of the Mishkan: testimony in deed.

The Mishkan actualizes what Torah proclaims—God’s presence within creation.

Therefore it is called “the Mishkan of Testimony.”

Its very existence bears witness to divine reality.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel and Torah uphold creation by continually testifying to God. The Mishkan, built with cosmic wisdom, embodies this testimony in physical form, linking the lower world to its upper root.
