Divine Presence and Testimony

In the Midrash: “And to whom will you liken Me…?” Therefore it says “Holy… lift your eyes on high…”.
The Sefat Emet begins by noting that true elevation toward God comes from recognizing the utter incomparability of the Divine and raising one’s perspective beyond the material.
For every approach to God is only through self-nullification and the elevation of the lower beings to cling to the Divine power found in all things as a portion and spark of holiness that is the life and soul of that thing.
He explains that closeness to God is achieved when creation nullifies its ego and ascends to attach to the Divine spark that animates all existence.
For “God has made everything for His sake,” and the Sages interpreted: for His testimony, to testify about Him.
All creation exists to bear witness to the Divine; the world itself is a testimony to its Creator.
And truly, the soul and vitality within each thing is the testimony, for nothing makes itself.
The inner life-force of each being points to a transcendent Source, proving that it cannot be self-created.
And in general, Israel are the soul and vitality of creation.
The Sefat Emet identifies Israel as the spiritual core of the world.
And they are the testimony to Him, as it is written: “Israel is holy to the Lord.”
Israel’s holiness serves as living testimony of God’s presence.
And they are the offering from all creation, as it is said: “God’s portion is His people.”
Israel represents the elevated segment of creation dedicated to God.
And it is stated: “You are My witnesses.”
The role of Israel is explicitly to serve as testimony to the Divine.
However, after the sin it is written: “Take for yourselves an offering.”
After Israel fell, their testimony was no longer inherent; they now needed to produce it through offerings.
And it is written “the Tabernacle of Testimony,” for they needed to find the testimony and clarification through the work of the Mishkan.
The Mishkan became the mechanism through which Israel restored clarity and testimony to God’s presence.
For beforehand they themselves were the witnesses.
Originally Israel’s spiritual state alone testified to God without need of external structures.
The principle is: according to the illumination of the soul, so is the testimony.
The degree of inner soul-light determines the clarity of Divine testimony revealed.
Therefore Shabbat is called “testimony,” for it is the day of souls.
Shabbat reveals heightened soul-light, thus serving as inherent testimony to God’s creation.
And similarly, through the Mishkan the vitality in the hearts of Israel was awakened.
The Mishkan reawakened the inner spiritual life of the people.
And not for nothing did the Sages say: it is testimony that the Divine Presence dwells in Israel.
The presence of the Shechinah itself becomes the ultimate testimony.
For Israel were recognizable as having been elevated and transformed to be like the angels of God.
When elevated, Israel’s appearance and conduct bore visible signs of spiritual transformation.
And they drew down illumination to the entire world.
Israel’s spiritual elevation radiated outward, influencing all creation.
As it is written: “He renews in His goodness every day the works of creation.”
This daily renewal flows through the channel of holiness present in Israel.
“In His goodness” refers to Israel, who receive the hidden good, the soul of life.
The hidden divine goodness manifests as the spiritual vitality given to Israel.
And through them renewal flows to the entire world, as it is said: “This month is yours.”
Israel’s capacity for renewal becomes the source through which all creation is continually revitalized.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that all creation testifies to God through the divine spark within it. Israel are the inner soul of creation and its primary testimony. After sin, testimony required external structures such as the Mishkan. Shabbat and the Mishkan restore soul-illumination, enabling Israel to radiate divine renewal to the entire world.
