On the pasuk: "If you walk in My statutes" etc., "then I will give your rains in their time" (Vayikra 26:3-4).

The Sefas Emes opens with the opening berachos of the parsha, focusing on the promise of timely rain.

This may be understood by way of what is said on the pasuk "And may Elokim give you" (Bereishis 27:28), where Chazal expounded: "He shall give, and give again." We explained there that Bnei Yisrael receive the shefa (flow of bounty) from the very Hand of Hakadosh Baruch Hu, for a true gift (matanah) is that which is given from hand to hand.

Chazal's "give and give again" teaches a continual giving. Bnei Yisrael receive directly "from the Hand" of Hashem — a personal, hand-to-hand gift, not a one-time deposit.

And although Hakadosh Baruch Hu gives life to all creatures.

Hashem sustains the entire creation, not only Klal Yisrael.

But Bnei Yisrael are the ones who receive "the gift," and this is the Shabbos, which is called "a good gift" (matanah tovah).

What distinguishes Klal Yisrael is that they receive Hashem's bounty as a direct, conscious gift — epitomized by Shabbos, the "precious gift" from Hashem's treasury.

And it is called "the vessel that holds beracha" — shalom (peace).

Shabbos is the kli that contains blessing, for peace/wholeness is the only vessel able to hold beracha.

For behold, Hakadosh Baruch Hu renews each day the work of creation.

Hashem continually re-creates the world fresh every single day.

And this renewal (hischadshus) not everyone is able to receive, but Bnei Yisrael are the vessels to receive this renewal.

Most of creation cannot consciously absorb this constant renewal, but Klal Yisrael are fashioned as fitting vessels to receive it.

As it is written: "This month (chodesh) shall be for you" (Shemos 12:2).

The word "chodesh" shares a root with "chiddush" (renewal); the mitzvah of sanctifying the new moon was given specifically to Bnei Yisrael — "for you" — as the recipients of renewal.

And all this is through their nullifying themselves to Him, Yisbarach.

What makes Bnei Yisrael fit vessels is their bittul — nullifying themselves before Hashem, which empties them to receive His renewal.

And this is the meaning of "If you walk in My statutes" etc., "then I will give your rains in their time" — meaning, at every time of need Hakadosh Baruch Hu bestows upon them anew.

"In their time" means precisely whenever it is needed: Hashem provides fresh bounty for Bnei Yisrael moment by moment, as a continual hand-to-hand gift.

And this is unlike the way all other creatures receive — through the way of nature, which Hakadosh Baruch Hu embedded so that the existence of nature is sustained by the power implanted within it.

The rest of creation runs on the "autopilot" of the natural order Hashem built into it — bounty drawn from a fixed, implanted system rather than from a direct, renewed gift.

But to Bnei Yisrael it is given anew at every moment, as above.

Klal Yisrael are lifted above nature's autopilot: their sustenance flows directly and freshly from Hashem's Hand at every instant — the reward for "walking in His statutes" with bittul.

Summary: Hashem renews creation constantly, but only Bnei Yisrael — through bittul, nullifying themselves before Him — become vessels able to receive this renewal as a direct, hand-to-hand gift, epitomized by Shabbos. Whereas the rest of creation is sustained by nature's fixed, implanted order, Klal Yisrael receive their bounty freshly "in its time" at every moment, straight from Hashem's Hand.
