Yaakov's Renewing Blessing of Shabbos
Concerning the difference between the blessings of Yaakov, where it is written: "And may Elokim give you [of the dew of the heavens]" (Bereishis 27:28).
The Sefas Emes examines what distinguishes Yaakov's blessing from Esav's, beginning with Yitzchak's words to Yaakov.
And regarding Esav it is written: "Of the fat of the earth shall be your dwelling" (Bereishis 27:39).
Esav's blessing speaks only of earthly abundance, with no mention of "Elokim giving."
As it is written: "From his own ways the backsliding of heart will be sated, and from his deeds the good man [will be satisfied]" (Mishlei 14:14).
The pasuk contrasts two types: the "backslider of heart," sated merely from his own ways, versus the "good man," whose satisfaction comes from above.
For the wicked one wants only to fill the desires of his heart.
The rasha seeks nothing more than the gratification of his own cravings — earthly "fat of the land."
And it is written [of Esav]: "By your sword you shall live" (Bereishis 27:40) — and what can flesh and blood find by human means?
Esav's blessing leaves him dependent on his own "sword," on what a mortal can grasp by his own effort — inherently limited.
Even though [his needs] are provided into his hand.
Granted, Heaven does supply the wicked with what they need.
But the blessing of the tzaddik is only to merit receiving a holy flow (shefa kodesh) from above.
The tzaddik's blessing is of an entirely different order — to be a vessel for the holy shefa that streams down from Hashem.
This is the meaning of "And may Elokim give you" — and Chazal said: "may He give, and give again."
Yaakov's blessing is a continually flowing gift, "give and give again," rather than a one-time fixed portion.
And this is the blessing that is constantly renewed from above.
The hallmark of Yaakov's blessing is its perpetual renewal, ever fresh from its heavenly source.
And in particular this is on Shabbos Kodesh, from which all six [week]days are blessed.
This renewing blessing is concentrated in Shabbos, the wellspring from which the entire week draws its blessing.
And on each and every Shabbos the root of the blessing is renewed.
Every Shabbos refreshes the very source of blessing for the coming week.
And therefore Chazal said: one who delights in the Shabbos merits the inheritance of Yaakov, [as it is written] "and I will feed you the inheritance of Yaakov your father" (Yeshayahu 58:14).
Because Yaakov's blessing is bound up with Shabbos, one who honors Shabbos with oneg inherits specifically the nachalah of Yaakov — the unbounded, renewing blessing.
This is [the meaning of] "and from his deeds the good man [is satisfied]."
The "good man" of the pasuk in Mishlei is Yaakov, satisfied not from his own ways but from a higher, given source.
The tzaddikim — their God endures over them.
The righteous rest upon and are sustained by Hashem Himself, not by their own devices.
And this is the aspect of Shabbos.
This state of resting upon Hashem is the very essence of Shabbos.
"From his own ways he is sated" — this is the conduct of nature during the weekdays.
Being "sated from one's own ways" corresponds to the natural, effort-driven order of the working week — the realm of Esav.
"By your sword [you shall live]."
This too belongs to that weekday, nature-bound mode of "living by the sword," self-reliance.
Like "standing over the Nile" (Bereishis 41:1) — they [the wicked] are sustained upon their own gods.
The wicked, like Pharaoh "standing over his Nile" (which he made into his deity), rely on and are sustained by their own self-made "gods" — their natural powers and possessions — whereas the tzaddikim are upheld by Hashem alone.
Summary: Yaakov's blessing and Esav's are fundamentally different. Esav receives only earthly "fat of the land," remaining dependent on his own "sword" and natural effort — like the "backslider sated from his own ways" and Pharaoh "standing over his Nile," sustained by self-made gods. Yaakov's blessing, "And may Elokim give you" ("give and give again"), is a holy shefa continually renewed from above — embodied in Shabbos, the source from which the whole week is blessed. One who delights in Shabbos inherits this nachalah of Yaakov, the way of the "good man" and the tzaddik who rests entirely upon Hashem.
