Man as microcosm awakening the barren places of creation

On the pasuk "And the tree of the field shall give its fruit" (Vayikra 26:4).
The Sefas Emes opens on the blessing in Bechukosai that the trees of the field will yield their produce.
Chazal expounded: barren trees (ilanei serak) are destined in the future to produce fruit.
Chazal read the blessing to include even fruitless trees: a time will come when they too will bear fruit. The drush will explain how this works within a person.
It appears that everything depends on the avodah of the person, for a person is called a "small world" (olam katan) and contains within himself all the details of creation.
Man is a microcosm; every element of the created world has its counterpart within him. So the fate of creation hinges on a person's spiritual work.
And according to the arousal of a person, in his entire complete stature (komah sheleimah), toward the avodah of Hashem.
When a person rouses his whole being — his full "stature" — to serve Hashem, that arousal radiates outward.
So too he arouses all created beings.
Because man contains all of creation, his own awakening awakens the entire world along with him.
And just as in the world there are fruit-bearing trees and there are barren trees.
The world contains both fruitful and fruitless trees — and the Sefas Emes now draws the parallel inward.
So too is found such within a person: limbs in which the chiyus (life-force) is abundant.
Some parts of a person are spiritually "fruitful" — rich with Divine life-force and readily aroused to avodah.
And there are those in which the chiyus is scant.
Other parts are like barren trees — places where the life-force is hidden and hardly felt.
And when a person rectifies everything — and this is like the chukim (statutes), where a person does not feel the reason.
Repairing these lifeless places is the avodah of the chukim — mitzvos whose reasons are concealed, done in pure submission rather than from felt understanding.
Even so, he is drawn after the decree of the King.
Though no reason is sensed, a person follows the King's decree out of pure acceptance of Hashem's will.
And by this he rectifies those places in which the chiyus is not revealed.
It is precisely this reason-less obedience that reaches and repairs the "barren" places within, where the hidden life-force is not yet expressed.
And this is "barren trees that are destined to produce fruit."
Through the avodah of the chukim, the "barren trees" within a person — and in the world — will ultimately bring forth fruit.
For we find that the beams of a person's house testify about him, as it is written, "for a stone will cry out from the wall, and a rafter from the woodwork will answer it" (Chavakuk 2:11).
If even the inanimate beams and stones of a sinner's house bear witness to his wrongdoing, then physical objects are bound up with a person's deeds.
How much more so the tzaddik, through his good deeds, certainly sends his voice far off to awaken the sleeping.
If stones testify against wrongdoing, all the more does a tzaddik's good deeds resound — rousing even the "sleeping," dormant parts of creation.
And all the more so with the entirety of Yisrael — when they rectify everything, then "all the trees of the forest will sing for joy" (Tehillim 96:12).
When the whole of Klal Yisrael completes this work of refinement, all of creation — even the "barren trees" — will burst into song and bear fruit.
Summary: Because man is a microcosm containing all of creation, his avodah awakens the entire world. Within every person are "fruitful" limbs rich in life-force and "barren" places where the chiyus is hidden. The avodah of the chukim — obeying Hashem's decree without feeling a reason — is precisely what reaches and repairs those barren places, so that the "barren trees" within and without will one day bear fruit. As the beams of a house testify against a sinner, so a tzaddik's deeds resound to awaken the dormant world, until, when all of Klal Yisrael completes the tikkun, the very trees of the forest sing.
