On the verse, "When you come to the land of Canaan … and I place a tzara'as affliction …" (Vayikra 14:34).

The piece opens with the verse about the affliction of tzara'as that appears on houses once Bnei Yisrael enter the land.

This is a good tiding — see the Midrash and the Zohar HaKadosh.

Chazal teach that the affliction is actually good news. The Sefas Emes will explain in what sense.

For it is taught regarding "which I am bringing you there" (Vayikra 18:3) that this place was exceedingly corrupted.

The land of Canaan had been profoundly defiled by its former inhabitants.

And of this we give praise, "and He gave their land as an inheritance, for His kindness endures forever" (Tehillim 136:21) — that Hashem brought the place out from under the hand of Canaan, and it became the inheritance of Hashem and a holy place.

We praise Hashem for taking this corrupted land out of Canaanite hands and transforming it into His own holy inheritance — a tremendous kindness.

Therefore, since it had been an exceedingly impure place, whenever Bnei Yisrael dwelling there afterward ascended in level, and the place was not yet fit to receive this holiness, an affliction sprouted in it to purify the place.

Because of the land's former impurity, when its Jewish inhabitants rose in holiness the residue of defilement in their houses could not hold the new sanctity. The tzara'as affliction "sprouted" precisely to purge that impurity — hence it is good news.

And to uproot the impure stones from there.

The affliction caused the contaminated stones to be removed, cleansing the house.

And so it is also with the souls of Bnei Yisrael, as we find in the early generations, who had lofty souls while their bodies required greater rectification — as it says, "Back and front You have formed me" (Tehillim 139:5) — and Hashem places a lofty neshamah into a coarse body in order to rectify that body.

The same principle works within a person. In earlier generations great souls were lodged in bodies that still needed much refining. Hashem deliberately joins a high soul to a coarse body so that the soul can elevate and rectify the body.

For Bnei Yisrael are witnesses to Hashem, as it says, "You are My witnesses" (Yeshayahu 43:10).

The purpose of this descent is bound up with Israel's role as Hashem's witnesses in the world.

And just as they testify in this world about Hashem — since the neshamah comes from above, it testifies about the holiness of Hashem above, in the upper worlds.

Because the soul originates Above, its very presence in a person testifies to Hashem's holiness as it is known in the upper worlds.

So too, when it returns rectified to Above, it testifies about Hashem — that He rules over all the lowly worlds — something the angels on high cannot grasp: how Hashem is present in such lowly worlds; and the neshamah testifies to this. And according to its avodah in this world, so is it a witness — as is explained elsewhere, that the testimony is not specifically with the mouth, but rather the person himself is a witness to the Creator, that He is One "in the heavens above and on the earth below" (Devarim 4:39), as it says, "You have been shown, to know …" (Devarim 4:35).

When the refined soul returns Above, it bears a unique testimony the angels cannot offer: that Hashem reigns even in the lowest, physical worlds. The quality of one's avodah here determines the strength of that testimony. This witnessing is not mere speech — a person's whole life becomes living proof that Hashem is One, in heaven above and on earth below.

Summary: The tzara'as of houses is "good news": because the land of Canaan had been deeply defiled, the affliction sprouted to purge residual impurity when its Jewish inhabitants rose in holiness, uprooting the contaminated stones. The same pattern works within a person — Hashem joins a lofty soul to a coarse body precisely so the soul can rectify it. This serves Israel's role as Hashem's witnesses: the soul descends carrying testimony to His holiness Above, and when it returns refined it testifies to what even angels cannot grasp — that Hashem rules even in the lowest worlds. A person's avodah turns his whole life into living proof that Hashem is One in heaven and on earth.
