Four Redemptions of the Soul
“In the four expressions of redemption.”
The Sefat Emet introduces the idea that the Torah’s four expressions of redemption correspond to deep spiritual structures within the human being.
For a human being is composed of the four elements: fire, air, water, earth.
Just as classical Jewish and mystical sources describe, the human personality and physical form are rooted in four elemental foundations.
And it is stated in the Zohar (Shemot) on the verse “From the four winds come, O spirit,” that even the spirit itself contains four spiritual elements.
The human soul mirrors the structure of the body: just as the body has four physical elements, so the spirit has four spiritual dimensions.
For the Holy One fashioned the form of the body in the likeness of the soul, as our sages said: “There is no artist like our God.”
The body is not separate from the soul but patterned after it, forming a parallel structure.
Therefore there are four redemptions, for the soul must be redeemed from the four physical elements of the body.
Each element of physicality can obscure the soul, and each requires its own process of redemption.
And this is the essence of redemption: that the elements of the body follow the elements of the soul.
True liberation occurs when the body becomes aligned with and guided by the soul.
Therefore there are four primary aspects in serving the Creator—awe, love, Torah, and commandments—corresponding to the four letters of the Divine Name.
These four modes of spiritual life map onto the four elemental structures of existence.
Awe corresponds to fire; love to water; Torah to air; and commandments, which rectify the body, to earth—the lowest of them all.
Each type of avodah transforms a specific elemental root within the human being.
And in more detail: just as the body has 613 organs and sinews, so the soul has 248 and 365 commandments.
The mitzvot correspond to the soul’s structure and shape its spiritual form.
As stated in Shaarei Kedusha, this is the meaning of the verse “and you shall live through them.”
The mitzvot give life because they activate the soul within the body.
And our sages taught: The Holy One wished to merit Israel, so He gave them many Torah laws and mitzvot, so that the body be refined and follow the illumination of the soul.
The abundance of mitzvot is a spiritual technology for transforming physicality.
For the root of the four elements is bound to the four aspects of the Divine Name.
The Divine structure underlies even the physical and elemental world.
And there the four spiritual and natural elements unite.
Redemption means restoring the unity between the spiritual and physical realms.
Therefore Shabbat is both a remembrance of the Exodus and a remembrance of Creation.
Shabbat contains both the unity of creation and the liberation revealed in the Exodus.
For in Creation everything was a single unity.
Before fragmentation, all elements were harmonized.
And through the Exodus this unity remained as a remembrance for Israel in Shabbat and festivals.
These holy times reconnect us to primal unity and liberation.
For they contain a radiance from the Exodus and a key to redemption.
Shabbat and holidays open the spiritual channels through which redemption flows.
And these four aspects correspond to the four redemptions from the four exiles, and our exile—of the element of earth, the lowest level—until the complete redemption arrives speedily.
History mirrors the inner spiritual structure: each exile parallels an element, and our current exile reflects the heaviness of “earth.”
As it is written: “Our soul has sunk to the dust… arise, be our help.”
The cry for redemption is the soul pleading to be lifted from the heaviness of the earthly element.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the four redemptions parallel the four elemental structures within body and soul, and that mitzvot and holy times restore unity between the physical elements and the Divine pattern embedded in creation.
