Moses as Israel’s Elevation

Vayakhel · תרמ"ד (1883) · Essay 3

Moses · Mishkan · Israel · Spiritual Elevation

“In the Midrash: ‘Many daughters have done valiantly, but you surpassed them all.’”

The Sefat Emet notes that the Midrash applies this verse to Moses, indicating his unique spiritual elevation above all others involved in the work of the Mishkan.

“For Moses our teacher erected the Mishkan, etc.”

Although all Israel contributed, the final establishment of the Mishkan was uniquely accomplished by Moses.

“This comes to hint that nevertheless the hand of all Israel was in it, yet according to the collective labor, Moses was elevated to erect it.”

The work of the people created the spiritual foundation, and Moses’ role was the culmination of the collective avodah.

“As it is written in the Leviticus Midrash: ‘I have elevated the chosen one from among the people,’ etc.”

This Midrash is brought to show that Moses’ elevation was not separate from the people but emerged from within them.

“Like the terumah, through which all the remaining portions are elevated.”

Moses is compared to the terumah: his elevation raises the entire nation, just as the terumah sanctifies what remains.

“So Moses our teacher was the terumah from the entirety of Israel.”

Moses embodies the highest, purified essence of the people, representing their spiritual apex.

“And thus it is written: ‘They brought the work to Moses’—this was their completion; afterward Moses placed his hand upon it.”

The people completed their task by presenting their work; Moses’ final act brought everything into full realization and perfection.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that while all of Israel contributed to the Mishkan, Moses served as the spiritual terumah—elevated from within the people. Their collective effort enabled Moses to raise the Mishkan, just as terumah elevates what remains. Moses’ final act completed and perfected Israel’s work.
