Elevating Nature to the Divine
Omer Offering · Renewal · Divine Flow · Bitul · Israel’s Will
Concerning the Omer offering, as it is written: “And he shall wave the Omer for your acceptance.”
The Sefat Emet opens by connecting the waving of the Omer to inner willingness and divine favor.
According to the Midrash on the verse: “What profit has a person from all his labor… under the sun.”
The Midrash teaches that all labor rooted only in the natural realm has no true renewal.
For the power of Israel is their ability to elevate all of nature and draw down renewal from above.
Israel’s unique spiritual capacity is to lift the natural world and connect it with divine renewal.
For there is nothing new under the sun.
Within nature alone, nothing truly renews; renewal must come from beyond nature.
And this is the meaning of waving and lifting.
The ritual waving symbolizes elevating the natural realm toward its divine source.
And the Sages called it the “Day of Waving,” because Israel had the power to elevate that day, as it says “for your acceptance.”
The day itself becomes uplifted through Israel’s spiritual will.
Thus there is no measure to this elevation, for it matches the desire found within Israel.
The degree of elevation corresponds to the inner yearning of the people.
And on this day the essential desire within the souls of Israel is found—on the morrow of the Sabbath.
This time reveals the deepest collective will of Israel.
As it is written: “Draw me—after You we shall run.”
Israel is drawn forward in longing to follow God without hesitation.
For just as God brought us out of Egypt without gradual stages,
The exodus happened suddenly, revealing Israel’s capacity for instant spiritual ascent.
So too Israel followed, as it says: “I remember you… your following after Me.”
Israel responded to God’s call with total devotion and trust.
For Israel cast aside everything and followed the Creator, and this power remained within them.
This inner strength of wholehearted commitment endures eternally.
And the Sages said: Bring before Me the Omer on Passover so the grain in the fields will be blessed.
The offering opens the channel of blessing to the year’s produce.
This does not mean that the intention is merely to receive blessing.
The Omer is not transactional; it is an act of spiritual elevation.
Rather, the meaning is that Israel brings nature to God and clarifies that everything is from Him.
The offering declares that all natural bounty is divine in origin.
And nature possesses only what the Holy One bestows from beyond nature.
Nature is not independent; its vitality flows from above the natural realm.
And by nullifying everything to Him,
Through surrendering all power to God…
Then automatically the blessing that flows returns to them first.
Israel becomes the first recipient of divine abundance.
And this is what is meant by “so that you shall be blessed.”
The blessing is the natural consequence of elevation and alignment.
For through this they take the first portion.
Israel receives the beginning because they offer the beginning.
As the Midrash says: “To the marked place it shall be taken, not by force… but through nullifying all powers to Him.”
The true elevation comes not by coercion but through surrender to God.
Then automatically everything returns to them.
What is lifted to God flows back to Israel in blessing.
The Omer reflects Israel’s power to elevate nature, draw divine renewal, and receive blessing through total alignment and surrender to God.
