The Sages instituted four cups corresponding to the four expressions of redemption.

The Sefat Emet begins by stating that the four cups of the Seder reflect the four divine promises of redemption in Exodus, indicating layers of liberation.

And also the matter of recounting the Exodus, which is a great mitzvah.

The mitzvah of retelling the Exodus is essential because it reawakens the experience of redemption in every generation.

The matter is that then it was in haste, as the verse says: when Moses told Israel these expressions, they did not listen to him due to shortness of breath.

Originally, Israel could not absorb the divine promises because the redemption came suddenly and their spirit was constricted by suffering.

Therefore, now we must recount the Exodus.

Because they could not receive the message then, later generations must actively retell it to internalize what was missed in the moment.

And certainly this was not said to Israel for nothing, even though it was known before Him that they would not listen due to shortness of breath.

God spoke the promises anyway so that they would become teachings for all generations, not merely messages for that moment.

Rather, this was made into Torah for all generations, and in every generation there is a revelation of the expressions of redemption.

Each generation receives its own measure of unfolding redemption, corresponding to the four divine expressions.

And what happened then in haste was later arranged in detail, as the Children of Israel later understood all the particulars of the redemption.

The hurried events of the Exodus were later unpacked and clarified as Israel matured spiritually.

And the meaning of redemption is continually revealed more and more.

Redemption is ongoing; its significance deepens with time, becoming clearer in every generation.

Therefore it is called the Seder, for the essence of the retelling is to order all the things that were done then in haste.

The Seder organizes and clarifies the previously rushed events, transforming haste into understanding.

Summary: The Exodus occurred too quickly for Israel to grasp the divine promises, so later generations must recount and arrange the details. The four cups correspond to the four expressions of redemption that unfold anew in every generation, and the Seder functions to bring order and understanding to what was once experienced only in haste.
