Bittul as the path to renewal
Bittul · Hischadshus · Parah · Shekalim · Zachor
In the name of my grandfather, of blessed memory: the placing of Parshas Parah before the [parshah of the new] month [teaches] that through bittul (self-nullification), like ash, one is able to find renewal — and these are words that are pleasant to their Master.
The Chiddushei HaRim taught that the ash of the Parah symbolizes total bittul, and only by reducing oneself to "ash" can a person reach genuine renewal (hischadshus).
For through nullifying nature — about which it is said, "there is nothing new under the sun" (Koheles 1:9) — only that which is above the sun is drawn down by means of bittul; and likewise every day there is renewal, and Bnei Yisrael, through mesirus nefesh (self-sacrifice), arouse this renewal each day, as it says, "with all your heart… your soul… your might…" and afterward, "and these words… which I command you today" — precisely "today."
Nature itself is fixed and offers "nothing new," but by nullifying himself to Hashem a person draws down newness from "above the sun"; the Shema's call to total devotion makes the Torah feel as fresh "today" as the day it was given.
And for this the [readings of] Shekalim, Zachor, and Parah were instituted beforehand, in accordance with the verse, "Let not the wise man glory [in his wisdom], nor the mighty man… nor the rich man…, but rather in this let him glory…" (Yirmiyahu 9:22-23).
The three special parshiyos correspond to the three things a person must not boast of — wisdom, strength, and wealth — but instead surrender them all to Hashem.
The meaning of "in this" is that he nullifies his wisdom, his strength, and his wealth.
"Glorying in this" means making one's only pride the act of nullifying all three personal gifts before Hashem.
For certainly the gifts given from Heaven are good and assist a person; only that the [true] effect is completed through bittul to Him, may He be blessed.
Wisdom, strength, and wealth are genuine Heavenly gifts, but they only achieve their real purpose when a person surrenders them back to Hashem.
And Shekalim is the nullification of wealth.
The half-shekel given by every Jew expresses the bittul of one's riches — wealth surrendered to Hashem.
And Zachor is strength — conquering one's yetzer hara, the war against Amalek — and through nullifying that strength to our Father in Heaven, as it says, "when Moshe raised his hand" — [Bnei Yisrael] would look upward — through this they were blessed.
Zachor represents gevurah, the inner battle against Amalek; victory comes not from one's own might but from directing one's strength upward to Hashem, just as Israel prevailed by looking heavenward when Moshe Rabbeinu raised his hands.
And Parah is the nullification of wisdom and intellect — to lower oneself like the hyssop and the worm — and afterward one arrives at the renewal mentioned above.
Parah represents bittul of one's own cleverness; humbling oneself like the lowly eizov (hyssop) used in its service opens the way to true hischadshus.
Summary: The three special parshiyos — Shekalim, Zachor, and Parah — embody the bittul of the three things a person is warned not to boast of: wealth, strength, and wisdom. Like the ash of the Red Heifer, only by nullifying these gifts back to Hashem does a person rise "above the sun" and reach genuine daily renewal.
