Mishkan Atoning Through Deeds

Pekudei · תרל"ה (1874) · Essay 1

“These are the records of the Tabernacle, the Tabernacle of Testimony…”

The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that the Tabernacle is called “testimony.”

It is testimony that the Holy One, blessed be He, forgave the sin of the Golden Calf.

The construction of the Tabernacle itself proved that forgiveness had been granted.

And in the Gemara: it is testimony that the Divine Presence dwells among Israel.

The dwelling of the Shekhinah is the ultimate sign of restored relationship.

For the Tabernacle was the rectification of the sin.

Its construction repaired what the Golden Calf damaged.

Before the sin, they did not require service through action or labor.

Their spiritual state was such that physical worship was unnecessary.

Because they preceded “we will do” to “we will hear,” the power of physical action was nullified entirely.

Their devotion elevated them beyond dependence on concrete deeds.

And after they sinned through an action, they needed to clarify things through action.

The fall through deed required a repair through deed.

By building the Tabernacle according to God’s will, as it is written “as He commanded…”

Their obedience restored the channel of Divine connection.

This was testimony that they were still in the level of “the children of Israel,” uniquely belonging to God.

Their essential identity remained intact despite the sin.

They had not departed from their true spiritual level because of the sin, Heaven forbid.

The sin affected them externally, not essentially.

For there exists a sin that is incidental, as written in the books.

Some sins touch only the outer layers of the soul.

And the building of the Tabernacle was testimony to the first level they had before the sin.

It revealed that their original purity was recoverable.

And the Midrash teaches: What should be done with the surplus? God said: Make a Tabernacle as testimony.

The leftover materials held symbolic meaning.

This is understood according to our explanation.

The Sefat Emet now ties the Midrash back to the earlier ideas.

As it is written: “And the work was enough, and there was extra.”

The verse contains an apparent contradiction.

And they ask: the beginning and end do not align, for if there was excess, how can it be “enough”?

The logic of “enough” and “extra” seems mutually exclusive.

But in truth, what caused there to be excess?

The surplus reflects something deeper.

If the Israelites were prepared to give for the Tabernacle, from where did the surplus arise?

Their giving should have matched the need exactly.

But it appears that the surplus came to clarify that the level of Israel was above the act of the Tabernacle.

The extra materials testified to their spiritual greatness.

Just as they were before the sin.

Their essential level had not changed.

Only they could not return to that level after the sin except through the medium of the Tabernacle.

The Tabernacle served as a bridge to restore their standing.

And after the Tabernacle, it became clear that they were above the realm of action.

Their true place transcended physical deeds.

Thus the surplus was testimony—understand this.

The leftover materials revealed their restored spiritual height.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Tabernacle served not only as atonement but as testimony that Israel’s essential spiritual level remained unchanged. The surplus materials themselves revealed that their root was higher than action, and through the Tabernacle they reconnected to that pre-sin state.
