Mitzvos Drawing Divine Presence
And by way of allusion: the “accounts of the Mishkan” are the commandments, “the precepts of the Lord are upright.”
The Sefat Emet begins by identifying the term “accounts of the Mishkan” with the mitzvot themselves, hinting that the Mishkan’s structure parallels the structure of divine commandments.
And they bring about the indwelling of the Divine Presence.
The mitzvot are understood to be vessels that draw and hold the Shekhinah.
Therefore the “accounts of the Mishkan” are called “the Mishkan of Testimony.”
This name reflects that the Mishkan testifies to the spiritual effect of the mitzvot: they invite God’s presence.
This explains how the Divine Presence comes through the mitzvot.
The Rebbe now clarifies the mechanism by which mitzvot enable the Shekhinah to dwell among Israel.
It is because every mitzvah is an acceptance of His blessed kingship, a testimony that we are bound to do the will of the Omnipresent, our Father and our King.
Each mitzvah expresses loyalty and submission to divine rule, forming a testimony of Israel’s commitment.
And through this testimony that Israel gives regarding Him, blessed be He…
The testimony of Israel, embodied in observance, creates a reciprocal relationship.
The Holy One, blessed be He, causes His Presence to dwell upon the mitzvot.
God responds to Israel’s testimony by resting His Presence upon the acts that express fidelity to Him.
As it is taught: the Holy One looked into the Torah and created the world.
The Torah is the blueprint of creation, and this idea supports the parallel between divine action and human observance.
To understand the words of the Sages, one must pay attention to how they emerge.
The Rebbe emphasizes careful reflection on what the Sages intended.
The work of creation came from a supreme power, higher than all heights.
Creation originates from an exalted divine force beyond comprehension.
But through the Torah and the law…
Although creation stems from a transcendent power, its order is maintained through Torah and divine law.
For there is a law for everything, how to conduct oneself regarding each thing according to the Torah.
The Torah assigns a proper mode of action to all aspects of life.
And through this, all deeds have endurance, because they are connected to the Torah, which is His blessed will.
The link to Torah bestows lasting value and divine alignment upon human actions.
And just as the Holy One created the world through the power of the Torah…
Creation itself is an imprint of Torah’s divine blueprint.
So too, insofar as Israel clarifies that the world’s endurance is through Torah and mitzvot which clothe themselves in action…
Israel’s observance reveals the truth that the world stands by virtue of mitzvot enacted physically.
To that extent they arouse His blessed providence as in the moment of creation.
Through mitzvot, Israel awakens a renewed flow of divine creative oversight.
And this is the meaning of “Torah, the Holy One, and Israel are one, each testifying about the other,” as taught in the Midrash.
The unity of God, Torah, and Israel expresses itself through reciprocal testimony—through creation, revelation, and observance.
And this is the “Mishkan of Testimony.”
The Mishkan embodies this mutual testimony and the dwelling of the Shekhinah that arises from it.
And understand, for this is a great principle in the Torah.
The teaching concludes by stressing the foundational nature of this idea.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Mishkan’s “accounts” symbolize the mitzvot, which serve as testimony to God’s kingship and draw the Shekhinah. Just as creation emerged through Torah, so Israel’s observance renews divine providence. Torah, God, and Israel testify to one another, forming the essence of the Mishkan of Testimony.
