Mishkan Testifying Divine Glory

Pekudei · תרל"ו (1875) · Essay 2

“These are the records of the Mishkan, the Mishkan of Testimony. In Midrash Tanchuma it is written that the Mishkan is beloved like the creation of heaven and earth, for regarding them it says ‘testimony’… and regarding the Mishkan it also says ‘testimony.’”

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash equating the Mishkan with the creation of the cosmos, noting that both are described through the language of testimony, indicating revelation and purpose.

“For the Mishkan was a repair for all of creation, as stated in the Zohar, and it hinted at how all beings are connected to higher realities and depend on the utterance of the Holy One.”

The Mishkan embodies the structure of creation itself, showing that every element of existence is rooted in divine speech and spiritual archetypes.

“And this is the testimony that Israel clarifies in this world, the world of falsehood, for testimony exists only to resolve doubt.”

Israel’s role is to reveal truth within a world characterized by concealment, serving as witnesses who dispel confusion.

“And all creation is also testimony about Israel, for through Israel the honor of God is clarified—that everything was created for His glory.”

Creation itself reflects Israel’s mission, since their service reveals the divine purpose embedded in the universe.

“And this is what Rashi meant: Why begin with Genesis? To declare the power of His deeds to His people.”

The opening of Torah with creation emphasizes that Israel must understand the divine structure of reality to fulfill their calling.

“Meaning: Israel themselves cleave to the supernal root, the place of renewal itself, as in ‘This month shall be for you,’ the first commandment, drawing from the root of unity above nature; therefore, creation exists only to reveal the power of Israel, who can clarify heavenly honor even in the physical world.”

Because Israel is connected to the divine source of renewal, their purpose is to manifest that unity within the constraints of the natural world.

“And Israel upholds the world, and through subjugating their hearts to God they were therefore able to build the Mishkan also in the physical realm.”

The ability to construct a dwelling for God in material form arises from inner devotion, which sustains creation itself.

“And this was the repair of the world: that they drew the divine presence into physical action.”

The Mishkan represents the harmonization of spirit and matter, allowing the Shekhinah to rest within human deeds.

“And this is the meaning of ‘This month shall be for you,’ for renewal is bound to Israel. Therefore, when they are in the world of separation, they clarify this renewal in all the places they dwell.”

Israel carries the power of divine renewal wherever they go, transforming fragmented reality by revealing its hidden unity.

Summary: The Mishkan mirrors creation, serving as testimony to divine purpose. Israel, rooted in the source of renewal, reveals God’s honor within the physical world, sustaining creation and drawing the Shekhinah into material existence.
