Faithfulness Drawing Abundant Blessing
“And in the Midrash: ‘A man of faith has many blessings,’ etc.”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash, which teaches that abundant blessing comes through one who embodies faith.
“The explanation is that the Holy One, blessed be He, is good and does good, and desires to bestow every good upon all creatures.”
God’s essential nature is to give goodness without limit, and His desire is that all beings receive divine beneficence.
“But if the receiver is not a faithful person, then through receiving he may forget the Blessed One who bestows all good, and thus come through the very act of receiving to sin.”
If a person lacks spiritual integrity, receiving blessing can corrupt him, causing him to disconnect from the Source of the blessing.
“And the Blessed One, all His deeds are in truth, so that the goodness be true and not lead to sin.”
God bestows only genuine good—that which elevates rather than harms the recipient.
“But the Children of Israel cleave in faith, and through receiving they humble themselves even more and cling to the Source who bestows.”
Israel’s faith transforms receiving into a spiritual act that deepens humility and strengthens attachment to God.
“Therefore they are able to receive the blessing.”
Because their receiving leads upward rather than downward, they become proper vessels for divine blessing.
“And this is the meaning of ‘a man of faith’: one who follows the root and does not fall under the foot of pride.”
The faithful person aligns with the divine root and avoids the ego that blocks blessing.
“Therefore, through the Children of Israel there are many blessings in the world, as above.”
Their capacity to receive properly allows blessing to flow into the world.
“And therefore on the holy Sabbath, when all creation nullifies itself to the Root, it becomes a vessel that holds blessing, as it is written: ‘And He blessed the seventh day.’”
Shabbat, like the faithful person, becomes a perfected vessel for divine blessing because all creation returns to its spiritual root.
Summary: Blessing can be received only by one whose faith keeps him connected to the divine Source; Israel exemplifies this quality, and Shabbat itself becomes the ultimate vessel for God’s blessing.
