Three seals of holiness in world, year, soul
Nissan · Shabbos · Bris milah · Mishkan · Separation
The continuation of the parsha, "and Moshe gathered..." (Shemos 35:1).
The Sefas Emes connects to the parsha in which Moshe gathered the people and conveyed to them the laws that follow.
And he told them the parsha of Shabbos and the Mishkan.
At that gathering Moshe taught Bnei Yisrael both the mitzvah of Shabbos and the building of the Mishkan — two themes the Sefas Emes will tie together as "seals" of holiness unique to Bnei Yisrael.
As it is written, "This month is for you" (Shemos 12:2).
This is the verse of Parshas HaChodesh, in which Hashem gives Bnei Yisrael the month of Nissan as the start of their unique reckoning.
That the Holy One gave Bnei Yisrael a special mode of conduct (hanhagah).
"This month is for you" signifies that Hashem gave Bnei Yisrael their own distinct way of being led, separate from the natural order governing the world at large.
In Tishrei the year is renewed in the way of nature, set up for the whole of creation.
Tishrei marks the natural new year, the renewal that applies to all of creation through the ordinary course of nature.
But in Nissan the way that is special to Bnei Yisrael is renewed.
Nissan, by contrast, renews the distinct path belonging uniquely to Bnei Yisrael — the supernatural mode of Hashem's leading.
This is the meaning of "On the first of Nissan is the new year for kings and for the festivals" (Rosh Hashanah 1:1).
The Mishnah's statement that Nissan is the new year "for kings and for the festivals" hints at this special status, which the Sefas Emes now unpacks.
All of Yisrael are children of kings.
The "new year for kings" applies to Bnei Yisrael, for every Jew has the status of royalty — a child of kings.
And in the aspect of the soul, it is the new year for the souls of Bnei Yisrael, who are children of kings.
On the level of the soul, Nissan is the new year for the royal souls of Bnei Yisrael, renewing their unique spiritual standing.
As it is written, "and you shall be to Me a kingdom of kohanim" (Shemos 19:6).
Their royal status is rooted in Hashem's promise that Bnei Yisrael would be "a kingdom of priests" — a nation of inherent nobility and holiness.
And this is the conduct special to them, and it is renewed in Nissan.
This royal, supernatural mode of being led is uniquely theirs and is renewed each year in Nissan.
And likewise "for the festivals," in the aspect of time and the year.
The "new year for the festivals" addresses the dimension of time: the Yamim Tovim, too, belong to this special order renewed in Nissan.
For the festivals are the choicest of times and are special to Bnei Yisrael.
The festivals are the finest, most elevated points of time, set apart specifically for Bnei Yisrael.
As we say, "[Hashem] who sanctifies Yisrael and the appointed times."
The Yom Tov berachah teaches that Hashem sanctifies Yisrael, and through them the appointed times — the festivals draw their sanctity by way of Bnei Yisrael.
And in Nissan this path is renewed.
The special sanctity of the festivals in time is renewed at the start of Nissan.
And also in the dimension of "world" it is the new year for the months — for all the workings of the world are through the twelve constellations and the months of the year — and it is called the month of "Nissan" because in it the way of "nissim" (miracles) is renewed, which is above the way of nature.
On the level of physical place ("world"), Nissan begins the count of months that govern nature through the twelve mazalos. Yet its very name, "Nissan," points to "nes" (miracle): in this month the supernatural pathway, transcending nature, is renewed for Bnei Yisrael.
And the aforementioned path that is special to Bnei Yisrael can be revealed only when Bnei Yisrael are separated from the nations, as the Midrash says on "they shall be for you" — "for you alone."
This unique, supernatural way only becomes manifest when Bnei Yisrael set themselves apart from the nations. The Midrash reads "lachem" (for you) as "for you alone" — the special path requires distinctiveness and separation.
And so Chazal said on "and Moshe gathered... the congregation of Bnei Yisrael" — that he separated them from the eirev rav and they assembled by themselves.
Moshe's "gathering" was precisely an act of separation: he set Bnei Yisrael apart from the mixed multitude (eirev rav) so that they assembled as a distinct, holy congregation.
And this itself is the aspect of Shabbos.
This very theme of separation and distinctiveness is the essence of Shabbos, which Moshe taught at that same gathering.
"It is a sign" (Shemos 31:17).
Shabbos is called an "os" (sign), a mark that distinguishes Bnei Yisrael as Hashem's own.
Special to Bnei Yisrael.
This "sign" of Shabbos belongs uniquely to Bnei Yisrael and to no other nation.
"Between Me and the Bnei Yisrael" (Shemos 31:17) — in private (b'tzin'a).
Shabbos is an intimate, private sign "between Me and Bnei Yisrael" alone — a hidden bond not shared with the nations.
And therefore the holiness rests upon it.
Precisely because Shabbos is this private, set-apart sign, kedushah dwells within it.
And also the Mishkan and the Bais Hamikdash served to separate Bnei Yisrael from the nations, and therefore holiness rests in it — in a place special only to Bnei Yisrael.
The Mishkan and Bais Hamikdash likewise set Bnei Yisrael apart, and so kedushah rests in them as a "seal" in the dimension of place, belonging uniquely to Bnei Yisrael.
Now, the Holy One made this "seal" (chosam) in the three aspects: world, year, and soul (olam, shanah, nefesh).
Hashem placed a distinguishing "seal" of holiness in each of the three dimensions of reality — space ("world"), time ("year"), and the human being ("soul").
Shabbos is the seal in time, special only to Bnei Yisrael.
In the dimension of time, Shabbos is that seal, set apart exclusively for Bnei Yisrael.
And the Mishkan and Mikdash are the seal in place.
In the dimension of place, the Mishkan and Mikdash serve as the seal of holiness.
And also in the soul there is the seal of bris milah, through which a Jewish person is made different from all the nations.
In the dimension of the body/soul, bris milah is the seal — the physical mark in the flesh that sets every Jew apart from all other nations.
And it is written, "The end of the matter, all having been heard... fear God..." (Koheles 12:13).
Koheles concludes that the ultimate purpose of everything is the fear of Hashem — which the Sefas Emes connects both to the future and to these three seals.
For in the future it will become clarified that He created everything for His honor.
Ultimately it will be revealed that all of creation exists for Hashem's honor — the "end of the matter" toward which all is directed.
But for Bnei Yisrael, even in this world they have something of this testimony — the seal of milah — which shows that they are children of the World to Come, and it is the "end (purpose) of man."
Bnei Yisrael need not wait for the future: already in this world the seal of milah testifies that they belong to the World to Come. This seal is the very "end" or purpose of the human being.
For [in] "ki zeh kol ha'adam" (for this is the whole of man), the final letters spell "milah."
The Sefas Emes finds a hint: the last letters of "ki zeh kol ha'adam" (kuf, hei, lamed, hei) spell "milah" — confirming that bris milah is "the whole of man," his ultimate purpose.
And likewise at the completion of creation, Shabbos — the end of creation — He placed the seal, and it is the purpose of creation, as it is written, "the completion (tachlis) of heaven and earth" (Bereishis 2:1).
Just as milah is the purpose of man, Shabbos, set at the conclusion of the six days, is the seal and purpose of all creation — the "completion of heaven and earth."
And it is written "fear God" — for on Shabbos yirah (fear/awe) takes hold, as is said, "even an am ha'aretz (unlearned person) feels the awe of Shabbos upon him."
The verse's "fear God" attaches to Shabbos, on which a sense of awe descends so powerfully that even a simple, unlearned Jew feels the reverence of the day.
And likewise at the bris milah yirah takes hold, as it is written, "be afraid for yourselves of the sword" (Iyov 19:29), as is brought in the Zohar (Vaeira).
The seal of milah, too, draws down yirah — the Zohar connects the "sword" of the verse to the bris, the mark that inspires awe in the dimension of the body.
And likewise in the Bais Hamikdash yirah takes hold, as it is written, "on the mountain Hashem will be seen / there is awe" (Bereishis 22:14).
The seal of place, the Mikdash, also brings yirah, as the verse about Har HaMoriah hints at the awe that rests upon Hashem's mountain.
And these are the seal in world, year, and soul, as above.
Mikdash, Shabbos, and milah are the three seals of holiness — and of yirah — one in each of the dimensions of place, time, and the human being, marking Bnei Yisrael as Hashem's own.
Summary: At the gathering of "Vayakhel," Moshe separated Bnei Yisrael from the eirev rav and taught them Shabbos and the Mishkan — for the supernatural "way of nissim" unique to Bnei Yisrael, renewed each Nissan, can be revealed only when they are set apart from the nations. Hashem placed a distinguishing "seal" of holiness in each of the three dimensions of reality: Shabbos in time, the Mishkan/Mikdash in place, and bris milah in the body (hinted in the final letters of "ki zeh kol ha'adam"). Each seal marks Bnei Yisrael as His own, is the very purpose of its domain, and draws down yiras Shomayim — so that even now in this world they bear testimony that they are children of the World to Come.
