Nissan: sanctifying time and renewal

It is brought (in the Mishnah, Rosh Hashanah 1:1): "On the first of Nissan is the Rosh Hashanah (New Year) for kings and for the festivals."

The Sefas Emes begins with the teaching that Nissan marks a new beginning both for "kings" and for the regalim.

For it is written, "This month shall be for you" (Shemos 12:2) — that time was handed over to Bnei Yisrael.

"This month is for you" means Hashem entrusted the sanctification of time itself to Bnei Yisrael.

As it is said, "Yisrael, who sanctify the times" — and by this power they went out from Mitzrayim.

It is Bnei Yisrael who consecrate the festivals, and it was precisely this power over time that lifted them out of Egypt.

That is why the parshah of "ha-Chodesh" preceded.

The mitzvah of sanctifying the new month was given before the Exodus because it was the very means of redemption.

For from the side of nature, Bnei Yisrael were enslaved to Pharaoh.

Within the natural order, they were bound in servitude with no way out.

And the redemption came about by virtue of their being elevated above time and nature.

Freedom came only because they rose above the constraints of nature and time.

This is the meaning of "for kings and for the festivals," for it is brought, "the servant of a king is himself like a king."

One who serves the King is elevated to royalty; serving Hashem raises a person above the rank of an ordinary subject of nature.

Therefore Bnei Yisrael are called "children of nobles" — first, because the Holy One took us out of the house of bondage.

One reason they are noble-born is that Hashem freed them from the "house of slaves."

For the governance of nature through the mazalos (constellations) is called the "house of bondage."

Being ruled by the fixed forces of nature and the stars is itself a kind of slavery.

But Bnei Yisrael, who were redeemed from the governance of nature to be drawn after a higher governance, are called "nobles" — secondly.

The second reason for their nobility is that they were lifted out from under nature's rule to follow Hashem's higher providence.

And they rule over time and nature.

Bnei Yisrael are not subject to time and nature but stand above them as masters.

And in the Midrash: when the Holy One chose His world, He established within it the beginnings of months and years; and when He chose Yisrael, He established for them a Rosh Chodesh of redemption.

The general cycles of renewal were set into Creation, but for Bnei Yisrael Hashem appointed a special new-month of redemption.

My grandfather, his memory a blessing, explained: although in every Rosh Hashanah and Rosh Chodesh there is a renewal from the creation of the world,

The Sefas Emes cites his grandfather (the Chiddushei HaRim): every new year and new month carries a renewal of Creation.

but it is within nature and concealed inside nature.

That ordinary renewal is hidden, buried within the workings of the natural order.

That is why "there is nothing new under the sun" (Koheles 1:9) — for the root of renewal cannot be revealed.

"Under the sun," within nature, the source of renewal stays concealed, so nothing seems genuinely new.

But for Bnei Yisrael He established a month of redemption, in which they merited to bring forth this renewal from potential into actuality, etc.

In the month of redemption, Bnei Yisrael are able to draw out the hidden root of renewal and make it fully manifest.

Therefore Bnei Yisrael are the vessels to draw holiness into the times.

Bnei Yisrael serve as the channel through which sanctity is drawn into time itself.

And it is written, "This month shall be for you."

Time is given over to them to sanctify.

The meaning is: the very essence of renewal, without any change.

"Chodesh" here points to renewal in its pure essence — the root that itself never changes even as it renews everything.

And it is called "the head of months," the root of renewal, as explained above.

Nissan is the "head of the months" because it is the very wellspring of all renewal.

Summary: Nissan is the Rosh Hashanah "for kings and festivals" because Hashem handed time itself over to Bnei Yisrael to sanctify, and it was this power over time that redeemed them from Egypt. Within nature — the "house of bondage" ruled by the mazalos — renewal stays concealed, so "there is nothing new under the sun." But because Bnei Yisrael serve Hashem they are like nobility who rule over time and nature, and in the "month of redemption" they draw the hidden root of renewal from potential into actuality, making Nissan the very head and wellspring of all renewal.
