Pure Renewal of Redemption

Bo · תרנ"ג (1892) · Essay 2

“In the Midrash: ‘Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord.’”

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash to frame Israel’s unique spiritual status as a nation directly connected to God.

“When the Holy One chose His world, He established in it a New Moon and years.”

Creation itself contains rhythms of renewal—months and years—expressions of God’s continual sustaining of the world.

“And when He chose Israel, He established for them a New Moon of redemption, etc.”

Israel receives not just natural cycles of renewal, but a higher form of renewal tied to redemption and spiritual liberation.

For it is written: “There is nothing new under the sun.”

Within the natural world, renewal is cyclical and does not transcend its own boundaries.

“For the Holy One renews in His goodness every day continuously.”

God constantly infuses creation with new life, but this renewal is often hidden beneath nature’s regular patterns.

“Yet it is written: ‘There is nothing new.’”

This emphasizes the paradox: renewal exists, but within creation it appears repetitive and veiled.

“For renewal has many levels, and it becomes clothed in nature.”

Divine renewal manifests in layers, descending through natural processes until its origin becomes concealed.

“But for the Children of Israel it is written: ‘This month shall be for you.’”

Israel is granted access to a more direct form of renewal, one that reveals its divine source.

“And this is the clarification of renewal.”

This command allows Israel to experience renewal in its pure, original form.

“As it exists in its root, without enclothing or mixture.”

The renewal tied to Israel is unfiltered, not hidden within natural cycles.

“And this is called the ‘newness of redemption.’”

Redemption reveals the primal, unmasked renewal that originates directly from God.

“And it is called the ‘head of months,’ which is the root of renewal, as it is written:”

The beginning of months represents the highest spiritual point from which renewal flows into the world.

The Sefat Emet distinguishes between natural renewal, which is concealed within the world’s rhythms, and Israel’s access to a pure, root-level renewal connected to redemption, symbolized by the commandment of “This month shall be for you.”
