Remembering Exodus Reveals Holiness
בפרשת קדש לי כל בכור כו' ויאמר משה זכור כו' ושמרת כו' החוקה הזאת כו'.
“In the section ‘Sanctify to Me every firstborn…’ and Moses said: ‘Remember…’ and ‘You shall keep… this statute…’”
The Sefat Emet opens by noting the sequence of commands: sanctification of the firstborn, remembrance, and guarding. These introduce the theme of how holiness received at the Exodus becomes actively maintained.
דכ' ביום הוצאתי כו' מארץ מצרים הקדשתי לי כל בכור.
“As it is written: ‘On the day I brought you out of Egypt I sanctified for Myself every firstborn.’”
This verse roots the sanctity of the firstborn directly in the Exodus, when a foundational holiness was given.
וכשאמר הקדוש ברוך הוא קדש לי ניתוסף קדושה בכלל בנ"י.
“And when the Holy One, blessed be He, said ‘Sanctify to Me,’ additional holiness was added to Israel as a whole.”
The command infused the nation collectively with an increased measure of holiness.
כי ביציאת מצרים נעשו בנ"י כלים להיות הקדושה בתוכם בכלל ובפרט.

אכן להיות ניכר בפועל ממש הוא בבכור.
“However, its concrete manifestation is in the firstborn.”

ואח"כ ע"י החטא ניתן זה הכח להכהנים.
“And afterward, through the sin, this power was given to the priests.”
After the sin of the Golden Calf, the priesthood inherited what once belonged to the firstborn.
אבל פנימיות הקדושה ניתן לכל איש ישראל.
“But the inner holiness was given to every Jew.”
Despite the shift, the inward sanctity remains universal within Israel.
ולכן אמר משה רבינו זכור את היום כו'.
“Therefore Moses said: ‘Remember this day…’”
Moses taught that remembrance activates this latent holiness.
כי לימד לבנ"י שבכח זכירת יצ"מ יכולין להוציא מהכח אל הפועל רשימה קדושה זו שקיבלו בנ"י בעצם היום הזה.
“For he taught Israel that through remembering the Exodus they can actualize the holy imprint they received on that very day.”
Remembering the Exodus draws out the originally implanted sanctity into lived experience.
וכ"כ למען תזכור את יום צאתך מא"מ כל ימי חייך.
“Thus it is written: ‘So that you remember the day you went out of Egypt all the days of your life.’”
The command to remember expresses continual access to that foundational holiness.
פי' זכירה הוא דביקות בפנימיות בקדושה.
“Meaning: remembrance is inward cleaving to holiness.”
Remembrance is not mental recollection alone but inner attachment.
ובאמצעיות יצ"מ יכולין לבוא אל הזכירה הנ"ל בכל יום.
“And through the Exodus, one can reach this remembrance every day.”
The Exodus serves as the channel enabling daily connection.
וז"ש למען תזכור באמצעיות צאתך מא"מ כל ימי חייך
“And this is the meaning of: ‘So that you remember, through your going out of Egypt, all the days of your life.’”
The remembrance operates via the Exodus as its medium.
וז"ש ושמרת כו' החוקה הזאת הוא הרשימה קדושה הנ"ל שצריכין להביא זו הרשימה והחקיקה בכל כוחות האדם בלב ונפש.
“And thus: ‘You shall keep this statute’—this is the holy imprint, which one must bring into all the faculties of a person, into heart and soul.”
The statute represents internalizing this imprint throughout the self.
והוא ע"י מצות התפילין שנקרא קדושה כמ"ש בזוה"ק.
“And this is through the mitzvah of tefillin, which is called holiness, as written in the Zohar.”
Tefillin is the concrete practice that channels and protects this holiness.
וכמו כן בשבת קודש יכולין להתדבק ברשימה קדושה הנ"ל שקיבלו בנ"י ביצ"מ.
“Likewise, on the holy Sabbath one can cleave to this holy imprint received at the Exodus.”
Shabbat also reawakens that primal sanctity.
לכן גם שבת הוא זכר ליצ"מ.
“Therefore Sabbath is also a remembrance of the Exodus.”
Its holiness is tied directly to the redemption.
וא"צ בו תפילין. כי הוא עצמו קודש.
“And it requires no tefillin, for it is itself holy.”
Shabbat inherently embodies the same sanctity that tefillin awakens during weekdays.
ובאמת בכל המצות יש קדושה. כמ"ש אשר קדשנו במצותיו.
“In truth, all the commandments contain holiness, as it says: ‘Who has sanctified us with His commandments.’”
The sanctifying power is present in every mitzvah.
אבל זו מצוה ראשונה שקיבלו בנ"י ביציאתם ממצרים הי' שורש הקדושה.
“But this first commandment Israel received upon leaving Egypt was the root of holiness.”
The firstborn commandment was the seed from which all sanctity grew.
ונראה שע"י שקיימו מצוה ראשונה באהבה ושמחה כמ"ש רש"י ז"ל בפ' זכרתי לך חסד נעוריך לכתך אחרי.
“And it seems that because they fulfilled the first commandment with love and joy, as Rashi says: ‘I remember the kindness of your youth, your following Me…’”
Their wholehearted devotion at the beginning established an enduring merit.
וע"י שהי' הראשית באמת ובלב שלם.
“And because the beginning was sincere and wholehearted.”
The purity of the beginning sanctified all that followed.
לכן מה שכרן קודש ישראל לה' ראשית תבו'.
“Therefore their reward is: ‘Israel is holy to the Lord, the first of His produce.’”
Israel becomes God’s own ‘firstborn produce.’
וניתן להם הקדושה. קדש לי כל בכור.
“And holiness was given to them: ‘Sanctify to Me every firstborn.’”
The command signals the transmission of enduring holiness.
פי' להיות נקודה קדושה ראשית ותרומה בכל איש ישראל לעולם.
“Meaning: to establish a holy point—first and elevated—within every Jew forever.”
Each person carries an inner firstborn‑point of sanctity.
רק שצריכין לייגע עצמן בכל יום להוציא מכח אל הפועל רשימת נקודה זאת.
“Only one must exert oneself daily to bring this point’s imprint from potential to actuality.”
The task is daily spiritual labor to reveal the inherent holiness.
