Circumcision and Pesach Beyond Nature

Bo · תרנ"ב (1891) · Essay 1

Concerning the commandment of the Passover offering, the Torah begins with “This month shall be for you.”

The Sefat Emet opens by noting that the mitzvah of sanctifying the new month precedes the command to bring the Passover sacrifice.

For circumcision and the Passover offering are the two severe positive commandments for which one incurs karet.

These two mitzvot are uniquely stringent, marking foundational covenantal obligations.

And they are the first mitzvot, preceding the entire Torah and its commandments.

Their priority indicates that they establish the spiritual basis needed before receiving Torah.

And circumcision is a physical sign to remove the foreskin.

This bodily act represents the removal of obstruction to holiness.

Through this, the body is repaired to become a vessel for holiness, allowing it to emerge from the prison of nature.

Circumcision refines the physical so it can transcend natural limitation.

As it is written, “Who will ascend for us to heaven,” whose initials spell milah.

A hint that circumcision enables spiritual ascent.

And likewise, through offering the Passover sacrifice, the general “foreskin” and physicality under the rule of time are removed.

Pesach purifies the dimension of time just as milah purifies the body.

And in the Exodus, Israel left the dominion of the stars and constellations, as stated in the Zohar.

Leaving Egypt meant exiting astrological determinism.

And they merited the principle that Israel is not subject to fate.

Having risen above nature, Israel is no longer bound to fixed destiny.

The reason is that Israel precedes the world, as it says “In the beginning”—for the sake of Israel, called “the beginning.”

Israel’s spiritual root is prior to creation, placing them above natural order.

And they are beyond time and nature.

This is the metaphysical basis for their freedom from mazal.

And Passover is the New Year for the festivals.

Pesach is the starting point of sacred time-cycles.

And the Passover offering is brought on the fourteenth.

The moment the renewal of time is activated.

And the removal of leaven is the removal of the foreskin so that time can rise upward.

Eliminating chametz refines time just as milah refines flesh.

For just as there is an Exodus in the soul, so too in time.

Spiritual liberation and temporal liberation mirror each other.

Therefore the verse begins, “This month shall be for you.”

Israel is empowered to sanctify and elevate time.

Israel sanctifies the times.

The authority of the calendar lies with them.

As it is written: “They are called holy convocations.”

The festivals’ holiness flows from Israel’s declaration.

And this comes through the Exodus, the removal of chametz, and the slaughtering of the Passover lamb on the eve of the festival.

These acts initiate Israel’s mastery over time.

And the Sages hinted that the fourteenth is called “first,” as implied from “the first man born.”

A remez that true “firstness” precedes Adam.

Meaning, when this was said to Job, it appears that there is one who was truly “born” before Adam.

This refers to Israel’s primordial root.

And that is Israel, who arose in thought first.

Israel exists conceptually before creation.

And through this power Israel can remove the rule of the Other Side and elevate the world above time.

Their primordial root empowers universal elevation.

And through these two rectifications, milah and Pesach, which remove the foreskin, Israel is then prepared for Torah and mitzvot.

Milah refines the body; Pesach refines time; together they prepare for Sinai.

Therefore it is written that one who violates them is cut off.

Because these mitzvot enable covenantal connection, neglect severs it.

And the miracles of the Exodus left an imprint on the souls of Israel, raising them above nature.

The miracles created a permanent spiritual elevation.

And in the Midrash on “You shall take a bundle of hyssop…”

The Midrash links the ritual to patriarchal foundations.

“And touch…”—interpreted as “From the beginning of the rocks,” these are the patriarchs upon whom the world stands.

The hyssop ritual connects Israel to the patriarchs.

“A nation that dwells alone,” etc.

Israel’s distinction stems from their patriarchal root.

The matter is that Israel’s souls rose to grasp the ways of the patriarchs by gathering together and separating from the nations.

The act of national distinction reconnects Israel to its origins.

And “touching the lintel” corresponds to the teaching: one should always say, “When will my deeds reach those of my fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?”

The ritual symbolizes striving toward the patriarchs’ level.

Corresponding to this, Scripture teaches that through the bundle of hyssop and touching the lintel and doorposts—symbolic of the patriarchs—

The doorway ritual enacts reconnecting with ancestral holiness.

As the Sages expounded on “Leaping over the mountains…”

God’s skipping symbolizes transcending natural process.

And just as, so to speak, God leapt over the mountains—

Divine action bypassed normal order at the Exodus.

So too Israel grasped the ways of their fathers not gradually.

They inherited patriarchal holiness instantaneously.

And through the commandment of the Passover offering they merited this.

Pesach empowered this leap into ancestral holiness.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that milah refines the body and Pesach refines time, enabling Israel to rise above nature and become prepared for Torah. These acts reconnect Israel to their primordial root and to the patriarchs, granting the power to elevate the world beyond time.
