Renewing the World Through Israel
“Regarding the verse: ‘This month shall be for you…’”
The Sefat Emet opens by focusing on the commandment of sanctifying the new month.
“And the Sages taught that the Torah should have begun from here.”
The first mitzvah given to Israel is seen as the true beginning of Torah, for Torah’s essence is realized in the commandments.
“The matter is that Israel merited to draw a new path into the world from the upper realm, a path of miracles and wonders unique to Israel.”
Israel introduces a spiritual pathway from above, enabling divine intervention and transcendence beyond natural order.
“And nature is for the nations.”
The nations remain bound within ordinary natural law, unlike Israel, who can rise above it.
“Since this renewal enters the world through Israel, therefore they take the leading portion.”
Israel stands at the forefront because they are the channel through which divine renewal flows into creation.
“And this is the entire way of Torah: to draw all of nature after a higher governance through Torah and mitzvot.”
The goal of Torah is to elevate the natural world so it aligns with divine will.
“And the Holy One, blessed be He, who desired to renew the world according to Torah, granted Israel the merit that this renewal should come through them.”
God entrusted Israel with the power to bring spiritual renewal into creation.
“And so it is for all time.”
This dynamic is ongoing; Israel continually brings divine renewal into the world.
“And every exile is a preparation for the light of renewal that must come at the time of redemption.”
Periods of exile cultivate the capacity to receive the future light of the final redemption.
“As it is written: ‘The former things have come, and new ones I declare; before they spring forth I tell you.’”
This verse teaches that God reveals future renewals to Israel even before they manifest.
“For the Holy One precedes by granting Israel, through their service, attainment of the new lights destined to come.”
Israel receives the spiritual illumination of the future redemption in advance, through their devotion and service.
Summary: Israel brings divine renewal into the world, elevating nature through Torah. Exile prepares for future light, and Israel is granted early access to the spiritual energies of redemption.
