Unity Lifting the Lowly

In the Midrash on the verse “And you shall take a bundle of hyssop.”

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash on the command to take a bundle of hyssop for the Passover rite.

This teaches that even though they were lowly, as it is written, “You were naked and bare.”

Hyssop, a low plant, symbolizes Israel’s degraded state in Egypt, as described in Ezekiel.

Nevertheless, through gathering together as a single bundle.

The unity of Israel elevates them beyond their individual lowliness.

From within that lowliness, holy assistance will come to them.

Their humility becomes the channel for divine help.

For the Exodus was only the beginning—their departure from Pharaoh’s bondage, preparing them to enter later into being servants of God through receiving the Torah.

Leaving Egypt was not the goal but a preparatory step toward Sinai and covenantal service.

And this is the hint in the sprinkling on the lintel and doorposts.

The ritual marks the threshold—symbolizing an initial stage rather than a completed journey.

To make known that this is still only a beginning.

The sign on the doorway emphasizes the unfinished nature of the redemption.

As it is said, “Open for Me,” which the Sages interpreted: “If you open even like the eye of a needle, I will open for you like the entrance of the Sanctuary.”

A small human initiative invites a vastly larger divine response.

And this was fulfilled then, for the Exodus was only the opening of the doorway.

Their redemption began with a minimal beginning, awaiting full divine expansion.

And the Holy One protected this small point, as it is said, “And the Lord passed over the doorway.”

God safeguarded the initial, fragile spark of their spiritual opening.

And although they went out with an upraised arm.

Despite the triumphal nature of the Exodus, their inner state still required humility.

The Holy One desired that the Children of Israel see themselves as a bundle of hyssop.

They must retain modesty and unity even amid deliverance.

And to know that they are still at the doorway, hoping to enter further inward.

The true goal—inner closeness to God—was yet ahead.

As it is said, “The King brought me into His chambers,” referring to the giving of the Torah.

Only at Sinai did Israel enter fully into God’s inner realm.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Exodus was merely the first opening toward redemption. Israel, though lowly, achieved elevation through unity—symbolized by the hyssop bundle. Their doorway marking signified a small beginning that God magnified. True fulfillment came only at Sinai, the entry into the divine chambers.
