Universal Praise Through Miracles

“They established them as days of praise and thanksgiving.”
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that the Sages fixed Chanuka as a festival specifically through Hallel and gratitude.
“For these miracles were performed to be a salvation for generations; therefore they instituted the Hallel, which contains a reflection of what was and what will be.”
The miracles of Chanuka carry enduring power, so Hallel—transcending time—was chosen to express their eternal impact.
“One cannot recite Hallel at every time, only when the inner gate, which is above nature, is opened.”
Hallel requires a moment of supernatural openness, when divine transcendence becomes accessible.
“Thus it is said that Hallel is not recited for a miracle that occurred outside the Land of Israel.”
Miracles outside the Land lack the same inner, transcendent revelation.
“For the Land of Israel and the Temple are the root of all places, as it is written: ‘From the edge (kanaf) of the earth we have heard songs.’”
Israel is the spiritual source from which praise flows to all places.
“Which refers to the Land of Israel.”
The verse’s ‘edge of the earth’ is interpreted as Israel itself.
“Therefore the miracle that occurred there is the joy of the whole earth.”
A miracle in Israel radiates joy to all creation.
“And the gates of praise and thanksgiving were opened for all places.”
The miracle activates universal access to Hallel.
“So too, the Israelites for whom the miracle was done can open the gates of praise and thanksgiving for all souls.”
Israel’s experience becomes a channel through which others are uplifted.
“And surely Israel, whom God chose, are the peg upon which all souls depend.”
Israel functions as the spiritual anchor for humanity.
“And in the future this will be clarified; therefore it says: ‘Praise the Lord, all nations… for His kindness has prevailed over us, and the truth of the Lord is forever.’”
All nations will ultimately praise God because His kindness to Israel sustains the world.
“Meaning: ‘The Lord is truth,’ for He gives life to every living being.”
Divine truth is the life-force permeating all existence.
“And He chose us.”
Israel was chosen to channel this life-giving truth.
“Therefore, through us, all will give praise.”
Israel becomes the means through which universal praise arises.
“And there are special times when miracles occurred that include all times, and in them the gates of praise and thanksgiving for all times were opened.”
Certain miraculous days carry universal temporal influence.
“Thus we say: ‘And for all of them may You be blessed… forever and ever.’”
Our liturgy reflects gratitude spanning all eras.
“And all the living will thank You.”
The life-force in all creation is drawn into praise.
“And I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory, that a Jew—according to the extent that he draws all vitality into praising and thanking His Name—can likewise awaken all living beings to give thanks to God.”
A Jew can ignite praise not only within himself but throughout all life.
Summary: Chanuka opens cosmic gates of Hallel; miracles in Israel and through Israel uplift all places, times, and beings, enabling universal praise.
