It is taught that the Greeks sought to abolish the month.

The Sefat Emet explains that the Greek decree targeted the Jewish sanctification of the new month, which symbolizes Israel’s unique spiritual power over time.

For it angered them that time was given into the hands of the Children of Israel, as it is written: “This month is yours,” meaning it is entrusted to you.

The Greeks opposed the idea that Israel could sanctify time itself—an authority granted by God—because it represents Israel’s spiritual autonomy and creative role in the world.

Therefore, when the Holy One took our vengeance upon them, Israel was given additional power to establish the festival of Chanuka, which they sanctified as holy days by their own authority.

Once the Greek oppression ended, Israel’s restored spiritual power allowed them to create a new sacred time—Chanuka—affirming their dominion over the calendar.

And Chanuka also comes through renewal.

The light of Chanuka expresses a spiritual rebirth, mirroring the renewal inherent in sanctifying the new month.

“Month” is in the holy tongue, while “Chanuka” is in the language of translation, meaning an extension of renewal into the lowest and most concealed places.

The Sefat Emet concludes that while the renewal of the month operates in a pure spiritual realm, Chanuka brings that renewal down into the physical, hidden, and lowly spaces—precisely where the miracle occurred.

Summary: The Greeks sought to abolish Israel’s control over sacred time, but through divine deliverance Israel received an even greater power—the ability to create Chanuka, a new sanctified period that brings spiritual renewal into the most concealed realms.
