Revealed kingship through the months

HaChodesh · תרנ"ז (1896) · Essay 3Share

Rosh Chodesh · malchus Shomayim · Exodus · renewal · twelve months

"This month shall be for you."

The Sefas Emes opens with the verse establishing Nissan as the first of months, and will explain how this marks the revelation of malchus Shomayim (Hashem's kingship) in the world.

In the Midrash: "Through Me kings reign."

The Midrash links the new month to the verse "bi melachim yimlochu" — kingship in the world flows from Hashem's own kingship.

For malchus Shomayim is revealed in this month.

The month of Nissan is a time when Hashem's kingship becomes openly manifest in the world.

For there is a renewal that is hidden — and this is in Tishrei, "ba-keseh" (at the concealment).

There are two kinds of divine renewal. One is concealed; this is Tishrei, alluded to by "ba-keseh la-yom chageinu" (on the covered/hidden day of our festival), where Hashem's kingship is crowned in a hidden way.

And there is a mode of divine governance that is revealed even in this world.

The second kind is an open revelation of Hashem's rule, one that can be perceived even within olam hazeh — and this is the renewal of Nissan.

And this aspect was given to Bnei Yisrael at Yetzias Mitzrayim (the Exodus).

The capacity to perceive Hashem's open kingship in this world was granted to Bnei Yisrael when they left Mitzrayim.

And this is "this month shall be for you."

"For you" means: for your sake this new dimension of revelation was opened.

For your sake this gate was opened in revelation.

The gate through which Hashem's kingship shines openly into the world was opened specifically for Bnei Yisrael.

And this is the essence of Yetzias Mitzrayim: through the downfall of the wicked, malchus Shomayim was revealed in the world.

The core of the Exodus was not merely physical freedom; it was that as the Egyptian oppressors were destroyed, Hashem's sovereignty became visible to all.

And it was for this that Bnei Yisrael labored four hundred years in Mitzrayim — to bring this mode of governance from potential into actuality.

The long servitude had a purpose: through their toil Bnei Yisrael drew this revealed kingship out of the hidden potential and into actual manifestation in the world.

And about this it is written: "For the sake of this Hashem did for me."

The verse from the Haggadah, "ba'avur zeh" (for the sake of this), points to that very revelation — "this" being the visible kingship now disclosed.

And it is written: "Behold, this one stands behind our wall…"

From Shir HaShirim, the verse pictures Hashem standing just behind the wall, peering through — a hint that the revelation, though present, is partly concealed.

"Looking in through the windows" — these are twelve windows corresponding to the twelve months, for on each Rosh Chodesh a special opening is unlocked.

The "windows" are the twelve months of the year; each Rosh Chodesh opens its own distinct gateway through which Hashem's light shines into the world.

"Peering through the lattices" is a small measure of light revealed each day as well, as it is written: "He who renews in His goodness, each day, the work of creation."

Beyond the larger monthly openings, there is a smaller daily glimmer — the constant renewal of creation that we acknowledge each morning in davening.

But Rosh Chodesh is a large opening.

The monthly opening is far greater than the daily glimmer — a wide gate of revelation.

And at Yetzias Mitzrayim this revelation began, as it is said: "This is my God."

At the splitting of the sea Bnei Yisrael could point and say "zeh Keili" — "this is my God" — the beginning of perceiving Hashem's presence in a revealed, almost tangible way.

And it is written: "When you bring out… you shall serve… upon this mountain."

Hashem told Moshe Rabbeinu that the sign of the redemption would be the avodah on "this mountain," Har Sinai.

"This mountain" is the aspect of malchus Shomayim [some words are missing here].

The "mountain" alluded to here represents the revealed kingship of Hashem — the same theme of disclosed sovereignty. (The text notes that a few words are missing at this point.)

And "upon this mountain" alludes to Mattan Torah, which is a level higher than this.

Serving "upon" the mountain hints at the giving of the Torah, a rung even above the revelation of kingship — Torah being the still deeper bond with Hashem.

And this is the Midrash's hint: "Through Me kings reign."

The Sefas Emes now returns to close the circle with the opening Midrash.

"Bi" (through Me) refers to the twelve months of the year, through which the governance of His kingship is revealed in the world.

Reading "bi" (whose letters have the numerical value twelve) as the twelve months, the Sefas Emes explains that it is through the unfolding of the year's twelve months — each a window of revelation — that Hashem's kingship is made manifest in the world.

Summary: The Sefas Emes contrasts two modes of divine renewal: the hidden crowning of Hashem's kingship in Tishrei, and the openly revealed kingship of Nissan, which was granted to Bnei Yisrael at Yetzias Mitzrayim through the downfall of the wicked. This revelation flows into the world through twelve "windows" — the twelve months, each opened anew on Rosh Chodesh — with a smaller daily glimmer of renewal in between. The Exodus began this disclosure ("zeh Keili"), and Mattan Torah marks a yet higher rung of closeness to Hashem.
