This month and the renewal of clarity
renewal of Creation · chodesh · clarity · Moshe's prophecy · chiyus
In the Midrash: "Wisdom has built her house..." (Mishlei 9:1).
The Sefas Emes opens with the pasuk that the Midrash on the parsha expounds, reading "Chochmah" (Wisdom) as Hashem's wisdom that built the world through the seven days of Creation.
"She has sent forth her maidens, she calls..." — [referring to] the seven days of Creation... Adam and Chavah...
The Midrash links the verse to the seven days of bereishis and to the creation of Adam and Chavah — the framework within which man is given his role in Creation.
For man was created to draw the vitality of Hashem to all the created beings.
Man's purpose is to be a conduit: to draw down Hashem's chiyus into all of Creation, connecting every creature back to its Source.
And to awaken in every thing the root of its vitality, which is above nature.
Beyond the natural surface of each thing lies a supernatural root of life; man's avodah is to awaken and reveal that root, which transcends the limits of teva (nature).
For the Holy One renews each day the Act of Creation.
Creation is not a one-time past event; Hashem renews ma'aseh bereishis continuously, every day infusing the world with fresh vitality from its source.
And Bnei Yisrael must clarify this — that everything is from Him, may He be blessed.
It is the task of Bnei Yisrael to "clarify" (mevarer) and make manifest the truth that all of existence flows continually from Hashem.
And through this they continually draw down renewal from the Source.
By clarifying that all is from Hashem, Bnei Yisrael become the channel through which the constant hischadshus (renewal) flows from the shoresh (root) into the world.
And this is the meaning of "This month shall be for you" (Shemos 12:2).
The mitzvah of "HaChodesh hazeh lachem" — the first mitzvah given to Bnei Yisrael — embodies this power of renewal entrusted to them.
For time is [the realm of] nature.
Time itself belongs to the natural order — it is part of the fixed system of teva that conceals the Source.
And "month" — [the division into] times, that the year is divided into twelve periods — these are concealment and more natural [still].
The breaking of the year into twelve months deepens the concealment: each subdivision of time is a further layer of teva, hiding the Divine root within ever more natural-seeming structures.
Time within time, as above.
The months are "time within time" — concealment nested within concealment, the natural order layered upon itself.
But "this month" is the renewal of clarity, for it is the first and is attached to the Source — therefore it is called "this month" (haChodesh hazeh), as Chazal said on "This is the thing that Hashem commanded, do..." (Vayikra 9:6); [and] in the Toras Kohanim: "that yetzer hara — remove it from your hearts... with one counsel..."
Nissan, "this month," is unique: it is the first (rishon) and stays connected to the Source, so it represents not concealment but a renewal of clarity. The Sefas Emes links the demonstrative "hazeh" (this) to other places where Chazal expound "zeh" as pointing to clarified truth — including the Toras Kohanim's call to remove the yetzer hara from the heart with single-minded resolve, restoring inner clarity.
And this is the clarification — that every deed be attached to the truth — as I have already written about this elsewhere.
This birur (clarification) means binding every action to the inner truth, so that nothing is left to mere concealing nature; the Sefas Emes notes he has discussed this elsewhere.
And it is like what Chazal wrote, that the prophecy of Moshe Rabbeinu was [through] "this thing" (zeh hadavar) — the clear, luminous lens (aspaklaria ha'me'irah); and this was given to Yisrael, to draw renewal from the Source into every time and every created being, as above.
Moshe's prophecy was uniquely through "zeh" — the aspaklaria ha'me'irah, the clear and luminous lens of direct vision, unlike other prophets who saw through a dim glass. This power of clarity — to draw fresh renewal from the Source into all of time and all creatures — was given to Klal Yisrael through the mitzvah of "this month."
Summary: Man was created to draw Hashem's vitality into all of Creation and to awaken in each thing its supernatural root, since Hashem renews ma'aseh bereishis daily. Time and its division into months are realms of nature and concealment — "time within time." But "this month" (Nissan, the first) stays connected to the Source and represents a renewal of clarity, binding every deed to the inner truth and removing the yetzer hara from the heart. Like Moshe's clear, luminous prophecy of "zeh," this power was given to Klal Yisrael through the mitzvah of HaChodesh: to draw renewal from the Source into every moment of time and every creature.
