Rosh Chodesh and Shabbos as beginning and end
It is written, "And it shall be, from one Rosh Chodesh to the next, and from one Shabbos to the next, all flesh shall come to bow down" (Yeshayahu 66:23).
The navi describes a future in which all mankind comes to bow before Hashem at each New Moon and each Shabbos, mentioning Chodesh before Shabbos.
And one must examine why the verse placed Chodesh before Shabbos.
The Sefas Emes asks: why does the prophet mention the month (Rosh Chodesh) ahead of Shabbos?
And my grandfather, of blessed memory, said that the month is the aspect of "beginning," for Rosh Chodesh faces toward the future.
His grandfather (the Chiddushei HaRim) explained that Rosh Chodesh represents beginnings, since the new month looks forward to what is coming.
And Shabbos is the aspect of "end," for the day of Shabbos relates to what has passed, as stated in Maseches Nedarim.
Shabbos represents the culmination, looking back over the days that came before it, as the Gemara in Nedarim indicates regarding how "the Shabbos" refers to the week just completed.
Therefore the verse placed Chodesh first — thus far his words.
Since beginning precedes end, the month (beginning) is mentioned before Shabbos (end). This concludes the grandfather's teaching.
And it seems fitting to further explain the matter.
The Sefas Emes now develops the idea further.
As it is written, "I am first and I am last" (Yeshayahu 44:6); and before the Kadosh Baruch Hu, may He be blessed, past, present, and future are all one.
Hashem transcends time entirely — for Him beginning and end, what was and what will be, are a single unified reality.
Now, this world contains an illumination from the aspect of "what was" and "what will be."
Our world carries within it sparks both of its primordial origin and of its ultimate future.
And on Rosh Chodesh there is revealed an illumination from the aspect of "beginning," as in what we say, "You formed Your world of old."
The light of Rosh Chodesh is the light of origins — connecting to the very first conception of the world before Creation, as expressed in the Mussaf of Rosh Chodesh.
And this is the "image" that existed before Him, may He be blessed, prior to the world's actually being created.
Rosh Chodesh draws from the Divine "design" of the world as it existed in thought before it came into actual being.
And Shabbos is the purpose of Creation.
Shabbos represents the goal toward which all of Creation is directed.
It is a hint to "the day that is entirely Shabbos," and in it is revealed an illumination from "what will be."
Shabbos foreshadows the ultimate future — the world-to-come "that is entirely Shabbos" — and so it shines with the light of what is yet to come.
And it is written, "the gate of the inner courtyard …" (Yechezkel 46:1).
The navi speaks of an inner gate, which the Sefas Emes reads as a reference to the inner dimension of reality.
Shabbos is the aspect of the penimiyus (inner dimension) of Creation, for this world that the Kadosh Baruch Hu created has within it an inner spirituality that cannot yet be revealed until the future, as it is written, "the earth will be filled with knowledge [of Hashem]" (Yeshayahu 11:9).
Hidden inside the physical world is a spiritual core that remains concealed in the present age and will only be fully disclosed in the future; Shabbos is the aspect that touches this inner reality.
Therefore on the day of Shabbos there opens a foretaste of the world-to-come.
Because Shabbos reaches the hidden inner dimension, it gives a glimpse of the future world even now.
"The one facing east (kadim)" is the aspect of "on the day of the New Moon it shall be opened" (Yechezkel 46:1) — which is an illumination from the aspect of the "days of old" (kedem), before the world was created, as above.
The gate that "faces east" — kadim, echoing kedem, "before" — corresponds to Rosh Chodesh, drawing its light from the primordial days that preceded Creation.
And this too is the aspect of "Back and front You have formed me" (Tehillim 139:5) — that within every Jew there is a portion of "what was" and of "what will be."
Just as Rosh Chodesh and Shabbos each carry the light of past and future, so every Jew is "formed back and front," containing within himself a share of both the world's primordial origin and its ultimate destiny.
Summary: Rosh Chodesh and Shabbos correspond to "beginning" and "end" — the light of the world's primordial origin and the light of its ultimate future, both of which are one before Hashem, who is "first and last." Shabbos opens the inner, hidden spirituality of Creation, a foretaste of the world-to-come, while Rosh Chodesh draws from the days of old before Creation; and every Jew, "formed back and front," contains within himself a portion of both what was and what will be.
