Divine Providence in All Existence

Bo · תרל"ד (1873) · Essay 2

“For I have hardened… and in order that you recount… and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

The Sefat Emet explains that the purpose of the wonders in Egypt, including the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart, was to bring Israel to a deep knowledge of God.

This means that one must come to the knowledge of God through the miracles in Egypt, in which His heart was hardened.

Through witnessing divine intervention even in Pharaoh’s resistance, Israel could recognize the divine hand.

And nevertheless, everything was in true justice.

Even the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart occurred within the framework of perfect divine justice.

And thus it emerges that in all actions and all governance, everything is under the supervision of the Most High.

The Sefat Emet generalizes: all events in life are guided by divine providence.

And all existence is from Him, blessed be He, Who brings all into being.

All reality is continuously sustained by God.

And this is the meaning of “for I am the Lord.”

This declaration emphasizes God as the sole source of existence and action.

And it is written: “Behold, the Children of Israel did not listen… so how will Pharaoh listen to me?”

Moses questioned how Pharaoh could possibly heed him if even Israel did not.

It emerges that he came to teach and ended up learning, for after God acted through His wonders, even the wicked Pharaoh was compelled to listen.

The outcome revealed that God’s miracles forced even Pharaoh to acknowledge the divine will.

And how then shall we not listen?

If Pharaoh was compelled to hear, Israel certainly must be willing to listen.

And it is possible that Moses said this a fortiori argument so that it would become clarified after the redemption.

Moses articulated this reasoning for Israel’s later reflection once the redemption became complete.

So that this knowledge would be with the Children of Israel through this a fortiori reasoning.

The kabbalistic insight learned from Pharaoh’s submission would become part of Israel’s permanent understanding.

For a person reasons through an a fortiori argument by himself.

Such reasoning is internal and intuitive, making it a powerful tool for spiritual comprehension.

And according to how a person understands the a fortiori argument, he can arrive at this knowledge.

Each individual can reach deeper awareness through properly understanding the argument.

Therefore Moses awakened this a fortiori argument for the sake of the Children of Israel, as stated above.

Moses introduced this reasoning to guide Israel toward a lasting recognition of God’s providence.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the miracles in Egypt, especially the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart, were meant to reveal God’s constant providence. Moses’ a fortiori argument was intended to give Israel a lasting internal tool for recognizing divine involvement in all events.
