Circumcision Beyond Natural Order

Bo · תרל"א (1870) · Essay 4

“In the Midrash: ‘Man and beast…’ and ‘At eight days old he shall be circumcised.’”

The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Midrash that links the categories of ‘man and beast’ with the command that circumcision occurs on the eighth day.

“So that he first behold the face of the Matron.”

This refers to the idea that the infant must first experience Shabbat, symbolized as the ‘Matron,’ before entering the covenant of circumcision.

“As it is written: ‘Give a portion to seven, and also to eight’ (Midrash on Tazria and Kohelet) — to seven refers to the seven days of Creation.”

The ‘portion to seven’ is interpreted as the natural order established over the seven days of Creation.

“To eight — the eight days of circumcision.”

The ‘portion to eight’ corresponds to the covenantal dimension of the eighth day.

“This teaches that circumcision is an aspect of eight — beyond nature.”

Circumcision represents a spiritual level transcending the natural order symbolized by seven.

“And one can attain this through the aspect of Shabbat, bringing the holiness of Shabbat into the weekdays.”

Shabbat serves as the bridge through which the transcendent light of ‘eight’ can permeate ordinary time.

“And this is the portion to seven, for Shabbat is a taste of the World to Come.”

Shabbat, though within the cycle of seven, contains within it a glimmer of the eternal ‘eighth’ dimension.

“And through their integration one can also reach the aspect of the eighth.”

By joining the sanctity of Shabbat with the rhythms of the week, a person can elevate all time toward the transcendent level symbolized by eight.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the seven-day natural order and the transcendent ‘eighth day’ of circumcision are connected through Shabbat, which allows the light of the higher realm to infuse ordinary life.
