Divine Kingship Revealed in Exile

וירד מצרימה אנוס עפ"י הדיבור.

“And he went down to Egypt, compelled by the Divine word.”

The Sefat Emet explains that Jacob’s descent was not voluntary, but driven by a Divine decree, indicating a purposeful spiritual mission.

פי' כדי לברר הנהגה ומלכות שמים בעולם.

Meaning: to clarify and reveal the governance and kingship of Heaven in the world.

The descent served to unveil God’s hidden rule and kingship within earthly reality.

כדאיתא בזוה"ק שהדיבור הי' בגלות.

As stated in the Zohar, “the Divine speech was in exile.”

The Sefat Emet invokes the Zoharic idea that God’s expression—His speech—was obscured and constricted.

והוא בחי' מלכות והנהגה עליונה שלא נתגלה בעולם רק ע"י ירידת בנ"י למצרים.

And this is the aspect of Kingship and supernal governance, which was not revealed in the world except through the descent of Israel into Egypt.

Only through the exile in Egypt could the hidden dimension of Divine Kingship be disclosed.

וירד לשון מלכות כמו וירד מים עד ים.

“He went down” is a term implying kingship, as in “and he shall rule from sea to sea.”

The verb “descend” hints at the emergence of royal authority.

וכ"כ ורדו בדגת הים כו'.

And likewise: “And you shall rule over the fish of the sea…”

This verse similarly uses the root indicating dominion, connecting descent with rulership.

וארז"ל זכה רודה בהם לא זכה נעשה ירוד לפניהם.

And our sages taught: If a person merits, he rules over them; if not, he becomes subjugated before them.

Dominion depends on spiritual merit—kingship can flip into servitude.

ובנ"י נכנסו למצרים ונעשו ירודים לפי שעה כדי להיות אח"כ רודים בהם.

And the Children of Israel entered Egypt and became subjugated for a time, in order that afterward they would rule over them.

The temporary descent of Israel was the groundwork for a later emergence into authority and spiritual mastery.
