Jacob’s Gift of Holy Speech

“In the verse: ‘And Jacob called… Gather together, and I will tell you.’”
The Sefat Emet opens by focusing on Jacob’s call to his sons to gather so he may reveal words of spiritual legacy.
“And in the Midrash: From where did Israel merit the recitation of the Shema? From Jacob.”
The Midrash teaches that the spiritual root of Shema—Israel’s daily declaration of faith—derives from Jacob.
“As it is written: ‘And this is what their father spoke to them’—that he transmitted to them the power of speech.”
Jacob bequeathed to his children a unique spiritual capacity: sacred speech.
“With this power the Children of Israel testify to the Creator, as it is written: ‘A truthful tongue shall be established…’”
Through holy speech, Israel serves as witness to God’s reality.
“Jacob is truth, as it is said: ‘You give truth to Jacob.’”
Truth is Jacob’s essential spiritual quality.
“And the tribes are the ‘lips of truth,’ for speech is completed through the lips.”
The tribes manifest Jacob’s inner truth outwardly through the vehicle of speech.
“Originally there was one language, but in the generation of Babel, because they were not bound to truth, the power of true speech was taken from them and remained only with Israel.”
The fragmentation of languages resulted from a break with truth; only Israel retained the root of pure speech.
“And it is written: ‘You are My witnesses, says God’—meaning through the power of the twenty-two letters and the holy tongue given to Israel, a language used by the ministering angels, and one of the ways humans resemble the supernal beings is through speaking the holy tongue.”
Hebrew connects humans to the divine realm, enabling Israel to serve as God’s witnesses.
“And this is the difference between ‘language’ (שפה) and ‘lip’ (שפת): the lips complete speech but also close and restrain what does not need to be spoken or revealed.”
True speech requires both expression and holy restraint.
“The letter Heh is an open lip.”
The Sefat Emet alludes to the form of the letter Heh as symbolizing openness in expression.
“And the lip of the letter Tav is closed until the future, as it is written: ‘Then I will transform… into a clear language.’”
In the future, all languages will be purified and restored to clarity.
“And truly, through the truthful speech of Israel, all future repair will come.”
Israel’s speech is the engine of cosmic rectification.
“And this is ‘shall be established forever’—meaning that through truthful speech all languages will be repaired.”
Sincere speech radiates outward, uplifting all modes of communication.
“And this is the power of the holy tongue that Jacob bequeathed to his sons.”
The inheritance of sacred language is Jacob’s spiritual legacy.
“And regarding this it is written: ‘Remember the days of old… ask your father and he will tell you,’ as Jacob said: ‘And I will tell you.’”
Israel is instructed to seek truth from its forefathers, as Jacob promised to reveal it.
“And the Children of Israel must seek truth every day, and it is revealed to them, as it is written: ‘You give truth to Jacob’—a present-tense giving renewed daily through the power of the Shema.”
Daily recitation of Shema opens the channel of divine truth anew each day.
“And therefore we bless before the Shema: ‘Who chose His people Israel’—because He chose us from among all languages, as it is written: ‘He set the boundaries of the peoples… God’s portion is His people.’ And we were taken out of the general mass in order to teach and rectify the entire whole, and to repair all languages, as Rashi explains: God, who is now our God, will in the future be fully recognized by all nations.”
The blessing before Shema acknowledges Israel’s linguistic and spiritual chosenness, which ultimately serves the universal repair of all languages.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Jacob endowed Israel with the spiritual power of holy speech. This “speech of truth” is the root of Shema, of Israel’s testimony to God, and of the future repair of all languages. Through daily seeking of truth—especially via Shema—Israel activates this inheritance, advancing the world toward clarity and unity.
