Hidden Truth and Inner Holiness
Truth · Inner Light · Exile · Jacob · Spiritual Struggle
Rashi writes: “Their eyes and their hearts were sealed…”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing Rashi’s comment that, at the end of Jacob’s life, the eyes and hearts of Israel became sealed.
For in truth, the heart and eyes of a Jew belong to God.
The inner faculties of perception and desire are inherently directed toward the Divine.
And only after Jacob, peace be upon him, passed away did the truth become closed and concealed.
Jacob’s presence sustained clarity; with his passing, spiritual vision dimmed.
And as it is written: “Do not stray after your hearts… and your eyes,” as things appear in external concealment.
The command warns against being drawn into the misleading outer layer, where truth is obscured.
And this is the essence of exile: the inner truth cannot spread throughout the whole person.
Exile is defined as the constriction of the soul’s inner light, unable to permeate one’s entire being.
And the advice I heard from my grandfather of blessed memory, on the verse “And Jacob lived in Egypt.”
The Sefat Emet quotes a teaching about finding life even within constriction.
That through truth one can awaken vitality even within concealment and constraint, as it says: “You give truth to Jacob.”
Truth itself carries the power to arouse Divine life even in the darkest places.
This means being constantly nullified to the inner essence, which is truth.
Spiritual vitality comes from aligning oneself with the inner core of reality.
For the external aspect is not truth—only concealment.
The outer layer of experience covers over truth rather than expressing it.
And according to a person’s genuine desire that everything be only the will of the Holy One, blessed be He…
One’s inner intention determines the degree to which Divine truth can be revealed.
So too is the truth revealed to him.
Revelation corresponds to the depth of one’s sincere alignment with the Divine will.
On the contrary: the more concealment there is, the more an inner treasure is hidden there, as is known.
Greater darkness conceals greater inner holiness waiting to be uncovered.
We find this also in the mitzvah of circumcision, for the organ of circumcision is holy.
The holiest point is precisely the one initially covered.
And therefore precisely there is the place of the foreskin.
The covering indicates the depth of sanctity hidden beneath.
As it is written: “The secret of the Lord is for those who fear Him,” which our sages interpreted regarding circumcision.
The mitzvah of circumcision embodies the principle that Divine secrets are revealed through the removal of concealment.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that exile arises from the concealment of inner truth, yet deeper truth is hidden precisely in places of greater concealment. Through sincerity, alignment with the Divine will, and the attribute of truth embodied by Jacob, one can awaken vitality even within darkness, revealing the holiness beneath outer coverings—symbolized by circumcision.
