Spiritual Awakening and Blessing

Vayechi · תרל"ג (1872) · Essay 3

Joseph · Awakening · Ancestral Merit · Covenant · Divine Protection

“And he blessed Joseph… may He bless… the lads…”

The blessing is presented as an awakening, directed toward Joseph and his sons.

It is an expression of awakening, as my master and ancestor explained: “na’ar” (lad) denotes one with heightened awakening.

The Sefat Emet cites his ancestors: “youth” symbolizes spiritual vitality and readiness for renewal.

And he placed blessing in the aspect of Israel’s awakening, which is the aspect of Joseph.

Joseph embodies the power of spiritual reawakening within the people of Israel.

“Who redeems me.”

Jacob attributes his redemption to God, linking the blessing to divine deliverance.

And what redemption did our father Jacob need?

The Sefat Emet asks: from what exactly did Jacob require redemption?

It may be explained as referring to the point from the Patriarchs that remains within Israel, as my master and ancestor taught: “Shield of Abraham” means that a spark of him remains in every Jew, and God protects that spark—and so it is with all the Patriarchs.

The “redemption” is the safeguarding of the ancestral spiritual point implanted in every Jew, which requires constant divine protection.

“And me”—this is the holy sign of the covenant that remains from him in his descendants.

The covenantal mark itself is the enduring trace of the Patriarch within his progeny.

And this requires protection from all harm.

The sanctified inner point is vulnerable and must be guarded.

“And may they multiply abundantly…”—my grandfather explained: within the physical land.

The blessing extends into material existence, not only spiritual realms.

This means, as stated above, that this inner point should spread throughout all their places of dwelling.

The goal is the diffusion of the sacred inner spark into every facet of life and every location where Israel dwells.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Jacob’s blessing invokes the power of spiritual awakening, rooted in Joseph’s quality. The true “redemption” is the protection of the ancestral spark within each Jew—a covenantal point from the Patriarchs requiring divine safeguarding. The blessing that the descendants should multiply “in the land” means that this inner spark should permeate all physical places and conditions of life.
