Spiritual Growth Through Trials
Yosef · Adversity · Zohar · Righteousness · Divine Providence
“In the verse ‘Ben Porat Yosef.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting that the blessing to Yosef contains a deep teaching about spiritual fruitfulness.
“As stated in the Zohar on the verse ‘These are the generations of Jacob: Yosef,’ for he is the one who produces fruits.”
Yosef is called the source of Jacob’s ‘offspring’ because he brings forth spiritual成果 both in action and influence.
“‘Porat alei ayin’—he produces fruit below and above, at the root.”
His fruitfulness manifests not only in the world but also in the higher spiritual realms from which all blessing flows.
“And because this is concealed, he therefore has conflicts, as it is said: ‘They embittered him…’”
Precisely because Yosef’s greatness is hidden, he encounters opposition and suffering.
“And through this itself he was strengthened and reached his lofty level—‘from there he shepherded…’”
The adversity becomes the very means through which his spiritual stature emerges.
“From there specifically—from those very conflicts.”
His elevation comes not despite the trials but because of them.
“As it is written: ‘Many are the afflictions of the righteous.’”
The Torah affirms that a tzaddik’s path is marked by many challenges.
“And the Zohar explains: it does not say the righteous ‘have’ afflictions, but that through those afflictions he is completed in his righteousness.”
The hardships refine and perfect the tzaddik, shaping his righteousness.
“‘From them all God will rescue him’—a term of separation, as in ‘And God separated… the livestock of your father…’”
Divine rescue means distinction and separation—God draws the tzaddik out from harm and sets him apart.
Summary: Yosef’s spiritual fruitfulness operates in hidden realms, provoking opposition that in turn elevates him. The Zohar teaches that a tzaddik’s righteousness is perfected through hardships, and God’s rescue is a form of separation that distinguishes him.
