Divine Protection Through Torah

Vayechi · תרל"ז (1876) · Essay 2

Joseph · Blessing · Spiritual Vitality · Torah · Protection

“And he blessed Joseph… the angel… shall bless… the lads.”

The blessing uttered over Joseph and directed toward the lads forms the framework for understanding Joseph’s spiritual influence.

And they ask: what is the blessing to Joseph?

The Sefat Emet notes the traditional question: if the blessing is stated regarding the lads, what does Joseph himself receive?

But the explanation is that he gave a blessing for the expansion of Joseph’s power.

The blessing concerns the unfolding and extension of Joseph’s inner spiritual force into the world.

And “the lads” refers to the arousal of vitality within the world.

The children embody the awakening of divine life‑force that Joseph channels.

The principle is that the root of vitality comes from Joseph, but when the flow reaches the lower worlds it requires protection.

Joseph is the source of life‑energy, yet its manifestation below must be safeguarded from distortion.

For in exile, due to the dominion of the Other Side, holiness cannot fully be revealed.

Spiritual exile suppresses the expression of divine vitality, making protection essential.

As the Sages said: in a year of famine, marital union is forbidden.

This teaching illustrates how diminished vitality constrains the proper flow of life‑force.

But the counsel in exile is through Torah, as it is written “they shall multiply like fish,” and Rashi explains: like fish covered by the sea, upon whom the Evil Eye has no power.

Torah, like water covering fish, shields the divine vitality from harmful forces.

So too, through Torah, which is compared to water, a person can cover himself from the Other Side.

Immersion in Torah protects the soul from spiritual interference.

And the Midrash states: just as fish yearn for a drop of water, so Israel yearns for Torah.

The desire for Torah renews and sustains inner life.

And according to the measure of yearning, the Torah protects them.

The more one longs for Torah, the more it serves as a spiritual shield.

And Rashi in Genesis says that the fish were blessed because they are hunted.

The vulnerability of fish necessitates a special blessing—parallel to Joseph’s need for protection.

Therefore Joseph, who is the root of all, requires a blessing.

His foundational role makes protective blessing essential.

And this is the meaning of “And God blessed… the seventh day,” for it is the root of all days, as it is said: from it they are blessed.

The source of temporal holiness, like Joseph, requires special sanctification.

Therefore it needs greater protection, as it is said: “Spread over us the shelter of Your peace.”

The highest sources must be guarded so their blessings can descend intact.

And this is “And he blessed Joseph… and may they multiply like fish,” meaning the expansion of Joseph’s power, as above.

The blessing ensures Joseph’s life‑force spreads safely and fruitfully through the generations.

Summary: Joseph is the root of divine vitality; his blessing enables its safe expansion into the world through Torah’s protective power, like fish shielded by water.
