Torah Vessel For Blessing
On the pasuk, "Hashem, the God of your fathers, has increased you... may He add to you a thousand times as many as you are" (Devarim 1:11).
Moshe blesses Bnei Yisrael that Hashem should multiply them a thousandfold — and the Sfas Emes opens by quoting this pasuk from the start of Devarim.
Chazal taught: "this" — the thousandfold blessing — is from me (Moshe), while Hashem will bless you without number.
Chazal note a distinction: the thousandfold increase is Moshe's own blessing, whereas Hashem's blessing is limitless, beyond number.
And one must understand what benefit there is in the blessing of a thousandfold, since in any event the blessing without number will come.
He raises a difficulty: why bother with a finite thousandfold blessing if Hashem's boundless blessing is coming anyway?
But the deeper hint is that Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, blessed them that they should become a vessel made ready to receive the blessing that is without number — as it is written, "Hashem will give strength to His people" (Tehillim 29:11) — and through the receiving of the Torah, Bnei Yisrael became a vessel that holds blessing, and then "He will bless His people with peace" (Tehillim 29:11).
The answer is that Moshe's blessing prepares Bnei Yisrael to be a fitting vessel; only a vessel built through Torah can hold Hashem's infinite blessing, as the verses about strength and peace teach.
And it is well known that after the sin of the Golden Calf, Bnei Yisrael fell from their original level, except for Moshe Rabbeinu, who merited and received all the crowns that Bnei Yisrael had received.
After the Cheit HaEigel, Bnei Yisrael lost their lofty pre-sin level, while Moshe Rabbeinu alone retained all the spiritual crowns.
And this — that he blessed them a thousandfold — is to restore them to how they were before the sin, for afterward there remained to them only one out of a thousand.
Moshe's thousandfold blessing aims to return them to their original height, since after the sin they were left with only a fraction — one in a thousand — of what they had.
A fixed point Hashem planted within every Jew.
Hashem implanted a permanent, indestructible point of holiness inside every single Jew that can never be lost.
But there are additional levels in the dimension of "a thousand times," and in this there is rising and falling for Bnei Yisrael according to their deeds.
Above that fixed point are further, variable levels — the realm of "a thousand times" — which rise and fall depending on a person's actions.
And this is the meaning of "may He add to you... a thousand times" — "this is from me" — which is the dimension of the Torah.
The phrase "a thousand times" that Moshe calls "from me" alludes to the Torah, the source of these added, attainable levels.
"Eleph" (a thousand) is from the language of "I will teach you wisdom" (Iyov 33:33).
The word eleph (thousand) shares a root with "a'alefcha" — to teach — hinting that this added dimension is the wisdom of Torah.
And then, "He will bless you as He has spoken concerning you" (Devarim 1:11).
Once that vessel is built through Torah, the further blessing "as He has spoken" can be fulfilled.
And beforehand it is written, "He has increased you... like the stars of heaven" (Devarim 1:10), and Rashi explained, of blessed memory, that they shine like the sun and the stars; if so, the addition of "a thousand times" too is in the elevation of the mind, as above — and it is found that on Shabbos Kodesh there is this dimension of addition.
The earlier pasuk compares Bnei Yisrael to shining stars; Rashi's words show that the thousandfold addition is itself an elevation of the mind and da'as, a dimension that is present on Shabbos Kodesh.
And therefore on Shabbos there is the blessing, the vessel that holds blessing, as above.
Therefore Shabbos itself is the blessing — the vessel that holds and contains blessing — as explained throughout.
Summary: Moshe Rabbeinu's blessing that Hashem should multiply Bnei Yisrael "a thousand times" seems redundant alongside Hashem's promise of blessing without number. The Sfas Emes resolves this by explaining that Moshe's thousandfold blessing is not the blessing itself but the preparation of Bnei Yisrael into a vessel fit to hold Hashem's infinite blessing — a vessel forged through the receiving of the Torah. After the Cheit HaEigel, Bnei Yisrael fell from their original level and were left with only one part in a thousand, yet Hashem implanted a fixed, indestructible point of kedushah in every Jew, while above it lie further levels — the realm of "a thousand times" — that rise and fall with one's deeds and are accessed through Torah. The word eleph, linked to "a'alefcha chochmah," reveals that this added dimension is the elevation of the mind through Torah. This elevation is especially present on Shabbos Kodesh, which is therefore itself the vessel that holds and contains blessing.
