Torah as boundless blessing for Yisrael

In Parshas Vezos Haberachah: "Hashem came from Sinai… a fiery law for them… He loves the peoples, all His holy ones are in Your hand, and they were gathered at Your feet… the assembly of Yaakov…" (Devarim 33).

The Sefas Emes cites the opening pesukim of Moshe Rabbeinu's blessing, which he will now unfold as a teaching about how the fiery, hidden Torah becomes accessible to every Jew.

The Torah is hidden from the eyes of all living, and it is literally fire.

In its source the Torah is utterly beyond human grasp — pure, untouchable fire.

But there spread forth from it rivers and pathways, until every individual of Yisrael has a portion in it.

From that hidden fire flow streams and channels, so that each Jew receives his own share of Torah he can take hold of.

This is what Moshe Rabbeinu bequeathed to us — "an inheritance for the assembly of Yaakov" — that every individual should have a portion in it.

Moshe's gift of Torah as a "morashah" (inheritance) means it belongs to all of Klal Yisrael, with a personal portion for each one.

And this comes about through the 613 mitzvos.

The pathways by which the fiery Torah reaches each Jew are the 613 mitzvos.

"This is the Torah which Moshe set" — that the illumination of the Torah should spread out through the 613 mitzvos.

By "setting" the Torah before Yisrael, Moshe arranged that its light be channeled and distributed through the 613 commandments.

This is the meaning of "Moshe commanded us" — through the apportioning of the 613 precepts.

The "command" of Moshe is precisely this division of the one Torah into 613 distinct mitzvos, giving each Jew his share.

Therefore it is brought that "Moshe Rabbeinu" has the gematria of 613, as explained elsewhere on this.

The numerical value of Moshe Rabbeinu's name equals 613, reflecting that he is the one who transmitted the Torah as 613 mitzvos.

"All His holy ones are in Your hand" — this is the aspect of the Avos.

The "holy ones in Your hand" refers to the Avos, the holy roots held close to Hashem.

"And they were gathered at Your feet" — these are the twelve Shevatim (tribes), about whom it is written "He loves the peoples," for each tribe is called a "kahal" (congregation).

If the Avos are the holy roots, the twelve tribes are those gathered at Hashem's feet; "amim" (peoples) refers to them, since each shevet is itself a full congregation.

And Yosef HaTzaddik includes all the tribes, and they are one single unity.

Yosef the tzaddik encompasses and binds all the Shevatim together into a single oneness.

They are called "the assembly of Yaakov" — the many congregations, the twelve tribes.

"Kehillas Yaakov" denotes the many sub-congregations, the twelve tribes, gathered under one name.

And they correspond to the thirteen middos (principles) by which the Torah is expounded.

The twelve tribes together with Yosef's all-inclusive aspect mirror the thirteen hermeneutical principles through which Torah is interpreted — the channels of its understanding.

And another interpretation: "His holy ones are in Your hand" applies to all of Yisrael as a whole, for the neshamos are the light of the Torah in the supernal root.

On a second reading, the "holy ones in Your hand" are the souls of all Yisrael, which in their highest source are themselves the very light of Torah.

"And they were gathered at Your feet" — this is the aspect of the bodies.

By contrast, "gathered at Your feet" corresponds to the physical bodies, the lower vessel that receives the soul's light.

Both of these interpretations are hinted at in the Sifri on Parshas Berachah — see there.

He notes that the Sifri alludes to both readings — souls and bodies, Avos and Shevatim.

And it may be explained that the three details — "from Sinai," "from Se'ir," and "from Mount Paran" — allude to the aspect of the three Avos.

The three places from which Hashem's light came correspond to the three Avos — Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov.

"From the myriads of holiness, a fiery law" — this is the aspect of Moshe Rabbeinu, through whom the Name of Havayah was completed, as is known.

Beyond the three Avos stands Moshe, the "fiery law," through whom the full revelation of Hashem's Name was brought to completion.

"He loves the peoples" — this is the aspect of that which is below.

"Choveiv amim" points downward, to the lower level that receives from the Avos and Moshe.

Therefore they are called "amim," from the expression "dimmed coals" (gechalim omemos).

The word "amim" is linked to glowing-but-dimmed embers — the lower level cannot bear the open flame, only its banked-down warmth.

For one cannot draw close to the fiery law except through the power of the Shevatim — the thirteen middos by which the Torah is expounded.

The naked fire of Torah is unapproachable; only through the tribes and the thirteen interpretive principles is it "banked" into embers one can come near.

For the essence of the Torah is "longer than the earth in measure" (Iyov 11:9).

Torah in its root is boundless, beyond any measure — hence it must be brought down through finite channels.

Now, both Yaakov Avinu and Moshe Rabbeinu blessed the tribes.

He observes that the Shevatim were blessed twice — once by Yaakov at the end of Bereishis, and once by Moshe at the end of the Torah.

For Yaakov prepared the vessels that would contain the blessing of the Torah.

Yaakov's blessing formed the Shevatim into "vessels" capable of holding the berachah of Torah.

And Moshe Rabbeinu filled them.

Moshe then poured the actual content of Torah-blessing into the vessels Yaakov had prepared.

As it is said, "an inheritance for the assembly of Yaakov" — that he made them a vessel that holds blessing, which is the aspect of shalom (peace).

"Kehillas Yaakov" expresses that Yaakov fashioned Yisrael into a blessing-holding vessel, and the only vessel that truly holds berachah is shalom — peace and unity.

And concerning this it concludes, "And He became King in Yeshurun, when the heads of the people gathered" — the aspect of the Avos.

The closing verse of the blessing ties it together: the "heads of the people" are the Avos, the lofty roots.

"Together the tribes of Yisrael" — these are the Shevatim.

And "the tribes of Yisrael together" are the twelve Shevatim, joined in unity beneath the Avos.

And it is brought in the Zohar HaKadosh: "Let the waters be gathered… to one place" — "Yisrael, one nation" — see there.

The Zohar reads the gathering of the waters to "one place" as a hint to Yisrael being "one nation," unified at their source.

And these are the thirteen tribes, a single unity.

The thirteen tribes (counting Yosef's sons) are fundamentally one indivisible whole.

Therefore the pasuk concludes, "and the gathering of the waters He called seas" — in the plural — alluding to the rivers of the tribes.

The plural "seas" corresponds to the many separate streams of Torah belonging to the individual tribes, even as the waters are gathered to one place.

As Chazal hinted, "the taste of a fish from the sea by Akko is not the same as…" — alluding to the twelve portions of the twelve tribes.

Just as fish drawn from different waters taste different, each tribe has its own distinct "flavor" and portion in Torah.

Now, HaKadosh Baruch Hu showed Moshe Rabbeinu, before his passing, the inheritance of all the tribes.

Before Moshe died, Hashem revealed to him the spiritual portion belonging to every tribe.

And he saw the portion of each and every tribe in the Torah, above and below.

Moshe beheld each tribe's share of Torah on both levels — in its supernal root above and in its earthly expression below.

The aspect of "His holy ones in Your hand" — above.

"Holy ones in Your hand" is the upper, root level of the souls.

"Gathered at Your feet" — the twelve banners and inheritances below.

"Gathered at Your feet" is the lower level: the twelve degalim (banners) and territorial-spiritual portions.

And "Vezos Haberachah" is the binding of the Written Torah to the Oral Torah.

This final parshah forges the link between Torah Shebichsav and Torah Sheba'al Peh.

Therefore it contains the passing of Moshe Rabbeinu and the power he gave over to Yehoshua.

Hence the parshah records both Moshe's departure and the transmission of his strength to Yehoshua — the handover from Written to Oral Torah.

For he illuminated the Written Torah into the Oral Torah.

Moshe caused the light of the Written Torah to shine forth into the living, ongoing Oral Torah carried by Yehoshua and those after him.

And this is the aspect of Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah.

This very joining of Written and Oral Torah is the essence of Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah.

"Atzeres shall be for you" — to receive the Written Torah into your very selves.

"For you" teaches that on this day each Jew takes the Written Torah inside himself, making it his own through the Oral Torah of his learning.

And this is the essence of the simchah — when the mouths of Yisrael are opened in Torah.

The true joy of Simchas Torah is the moment Yisrael's own mouths open to speak words of Torah — the Oral Torah flowing from them.

And concerning this it is written, "joy to a man in the answer of his mouth" (Mishlei 15:23) — in Torah.

A person's deepest joy is when Torah issues from his own mouth, which is the avodah of Torah Sheba'al Peh.

And it is brought in the Midrash: when Moshe came to bless Yisrael, HaKadosh Baruch Hu and also the Torah came to bless Yisrael — see there.

The Midrash describes three blessing Yisrael together: Moshe, Hashem, and the Torah itself.

For Kudsha Brich Hu (the Holy One), the Torah, and Yisrael are one.

This rests on the well-known teaching that Hashem, the Torah, and Yisrael are ultimately a single unity.

The meaning is: the Torah is the essence of the blessing.

The Torah itself is the very substance of the berachah being given.

And HaKadosh Baruch Hu gives the blessing.

Hashem is the One who bestows it.

And Bnei Yisrael are the vessel that holds the blessing.

Yisrael are the vessel fit to contain and retain that berachah.

And through the joining of these three, the blessing is made complete.

Only when Hashem (the Giver), Torah (the blessing), and Yisrael (the vessel) unite is the berachah whole — the very oneness of "Kudsha Brich Hu, Oraysa, v'Yisrael chad."

And the Torah begins with the letter beis — an expression of berachah — and the Torah ends with "Vezos Haberachah," that the blessing is completed, as it is written, "the blessing, if you will hearken."

The Torah opens with beis (the letter of blessing, "berachah") and closes with the word "haberachah," framing the whole Torah as one complete blessing.

The twenty-two letters — there is no measure to all the combinations within them, through the 231 gates.

The twenty-two letters of the alef-beis combine in endless ways through the 231 "gates" (pairings), an unlimited source of creative power.

"HaBerachah" has the gematria of 232 — the totality of the twenty-two letters together with the 231 gates.

The word "haberachah" (232) equals the 22 letters plus their 231 gates of combination — blessing is the full creative potential of the letters.

And the essential meaning of the term "berachah" is the expansion of a thing to produce offspring and fruits.

Berachah means increase and fruitfulness — a thing spreading out to bring forth new generations and produce.

For every combination is another offspring, and there is no measure to them.

Each new letter-combination is itself a new "child," and these are infinite — the boundless fruitfulness of the Torah's letters.

Therefore none can receive this blessing except Bnei Yisrael, through the power of the Torah.

This limitless berachah can be contained only by Yisrael, and only by virtue of their bond to the Torah.

As it is brought: "Yisrael" contains "yeish 231" (yud-shin = 310, but read as the letters containing 231), for within them are the 231 gates.

The name "Yisrael" is read as alluding to the 231 gates, teaching that Yisrael themselves embody the full range of the letters' combinations.

For they too are of the aspect of "without number," and they are the vessel that holds the blessing.

Like the infinite combinations of the letters, Yisrael are "beyond number," which is precisely why they alone can serve as the vessel for the boundless berachah.

We must rejoice greatly in the Torah.

He now draws the practical lesson: one must take immense simchah in the Torah.

For it is brought (in Tana D'vei Eliyahu) that HaKadosh Baruch Hu said: "The Torah is beloved to Me, because it teaches Bnei Yisrael to better their deeds."

Even Hashem cherishes the Torah for its power to refine and improve the conduct of His people.

All the more so must we rejoice in the Torah, which sets us aright.

If Hashem Himself treasures it, how much more should we rejoice in the Torah that repairs and perfects us.

As it is brought: "A woman forms a covenant only with one who makes her into a vessel."

Just as a bond of love forms with the one who completes and "makes a vessel," so Yisrael bind themselves in covenant to the Torah, which fashions them into a fitting vessel for blessing — sealing the joy of Simchas Torah.

Summary: The Torah in its root is hidden, boundless fire, unapproachable directly; it reaches each Jew only as it spreads into "rivers and pathways" through the 613 mitzvos and the thirteen principles of interpretation, channeled by the Avos and the twelve Shevatim. Yaakov fashioned Yisrael into vessels of blessing — the aspect of shalom — and Moshe filled them, binding the Written Torah to the Oral Torah. This union is the heart of Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah, when Yisrael's own mouths open in Torah. Since Hashem, the Torah, and Yisrael are one, and the word "haberachah" (232) holds the infinite letter-combinations of the 231 gates, only Yisrael — themselves "beyond number" — can be the vessel for this limitless blessing. Therefore we must rejoice greatly in the Torah that perfects us and makes us a fit vessel for Hashem's berachah.
