Shabbos as unmediated holiness replacing the Mishkan
On the pasuk "However (ach), My Shabbosos you shall keep" (Shemos 31:13) — to exclude Shabbos from the work of the Mishkan.
The word "ach" teaches that even the holy labor of building the Mishkan does not override Shabbos — Shabbos stands apart.
The explanation: on Shabbos Kodesh one is able to cleave to holiness without the work of the Mishkan.
Shabbos provides direct access to kedushah, making the Mishkan's labor unnecessary on that day — hence the work is suspended.
As it is brought in the Zohar HaKodosh on the pasuk "and this is the terumah (offering) that you shall take from them" (Shemos 25:3).
The Zohar reads the list of materials for the Mishkan as alluding to spiritual realities.
"From them (mei'atem)" [is read as] "from times (mei'es zmanim)" and Shabbos…
The Zohar expounds "mei'atem" as alluding to the sacred times — the festivals and Shabbos — from which holiness is drawn.
Just as those thirteen items from which the Mishkan was made are a rectification through deed (tikkun b'uvda).
The thirteen physical materials of the Mishkan accomplish a tikkun through concrete action in the world.
So too we are able to draw an illumination from these thirteen times that are explained there in the Zohar HaKodosh.
Parallel to the thirteen materials, there are thirteen sacred times from which one can draw spiritual light, as the Zohar details.
And Shabbos includes all the festivals (mo'ados).
Shabbos is the all-encompassing sacred time that contains within it the holiness of all the festivals.
And just as on the weekdays one needs tefillin, but on Shabbos Kodesh one does not need them, for they themselves are a "sign (os)."
Tefillin are an "os," a sign of the bond with Hashem; on weekdays this sign is needed, but Shabbos is itself such a sign, making tefillin unnecessary.
So too it is with the work of the Mishkan.
Just as Shabbos renders tefillin unnecessary, so it renders the Mishkan's labor unnecessary — Shabbos itself supplies what they provide.
Therefore it is written "it is a sign between Me and you" — without an intermediary (emtza'i).
Shabbos is a direct sign of connection between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael, requiring no intermediary such as tefillin or the Mishkan's avodah.
However, the meaning of "ach (however)" is to be pure before Shabbos.
The limiting word "ach" also hints at the need to purify oneself in preparation, before Shabbos arrives.
A hint to the purification of the mikvah on Erev Shabbos.
This alludes to the practice of immersing in a mikvah on Friday in readiness for Shabbos.
And this is to remove the physical garment, to be prepared to receive the holiness.
The pre-Shabbos purification means stripping away the coarse "garment" of physicality so one is ready to absorb Shabbos's kedushah.
And the truth is that Shabbos Kodesh itself also assists with this, as it is brought in the Zohar HaKodosh there, that all the sitra achra (the side of impurity) is removed from him.
Even the act of purification is aided by Shabbos itself, for the incoming Shabbos drives away all forces of impurity from the person.
And certainly so it is in the souls of Bnei Yisrael when the illumination of Shabbos Kodesh comes upon them.
The same purifying dynamic occurs within the souls of Bnei Yisrael as the light of Shabbos descends upon them.
For the Holy One, blessed be He, rolls light away before darkness and darkness before light (golel or mipnei choshech).
Just as Hashem alternates light and darkness in nature, when Shabbos light arrives it rolls away the darkness.
Therefore, with the revelation of the light of Shabbos and the light of the neshamah yeseirah within a person, all the sitra achra flees.
When the Shabbos light and the additional soul are revealed in a person, the forces of impurity automatically flee before them.
And all the darkness that conceals the inner dimension (penimius) is removed.
The Shabbos light strips away the darkness that had been covering over a person's inner spiritual core.
And concerning this they instituted "[Retzei] vehachalitzeinu (and strengthen/release us)."
The Shabbos prayer "vehachalitzeinu" was instituted to express this very theme.
"Hachalitzeinu" includes both.
The word "hachalitzeinu" carries a double meaning, encompassing two aspects.
The removal of the weekday garments and the donning of garments of holiness (machalatzos d'kedushah).
"Chalitzah" can mean both stripping off (the mundane garments) and clothing oneself anew (in holy garments) — exactly what Shabbos accomplishes.
For Shabbos is a foretaste of the World to Come (me'ein olam haba), and just as it is written "remove the soiled garments… and clothe him in fine garments (machalatzos)" (Zechariah 3:4), so it is on Shabbos, a semblance of this.
As a taste of olam haba, Shabbos mirrors Yehoshua the Kohen Gadol's vision: the soiled garments (sin and physicality) are removed and holy garments are put on in their place.
And so it is with all the mitzvos, for each mitzvah is meant to rectify a particular limb.
The Sefas Emes broadens the principle: every mitzvah repairs a specific limb of the body.
If so, the inner vitality is revealed in that limb, and the physicality is removed, and "it sheds one form and dons another (poshetes tzurah v'loveshes tzurah)."
Each mitzvah uncovers the inner life-force in its limb, removing its coarseness — a transformation of form, shedding the physical and assuming the spiritual.
Only Shabbos is a garment for the entire soul (nefesh).
Whereas individual mitzvos rectify particular limbs, Shabbos clothes and elevates the whole soul at once.
And so I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory, regarding what we find concerning particular mitzvos that are "weighed against all the mitzvos," such as tzitzis and Shabbos.
He cites a teaching from his grandfather (the Chiddushei HaRim) about certain individual mitzvos, like tzitzis and Shabbos, said to be equal in weight to all the mitzvos combined.
And he explained that every mitzvah is the rectification of a particular limb.
His grandfather's principle: ordinarily each mitzvah corresponds to and repairs one specific limb.
But these mitzvos are the rectification of the entire stature (kol hakomah).
Tzitzis and Shabbos are "weighed against all the mitzvos" because they rectify the whole person at once, not merely a single limb.
And behold, the rectification of "world, year, and soul (olam, shanah, nefesh)" — [space, time, and self] — are interdependent.
The three dimensions of creation — space (olam), time (shanah), and the human self (nefesh) — are bound together, and their tikkunim correspond.
And in the Mishkan and the Bais Hamikdash there were rectifications in the aspect of "world (olam)" [space].
The Mishkan and Mikdash accomplish tikkun in the dimension of space.
And "My Shabbosos and My appointed times (shabbosai v'zimanai)" are the rectification of time and the year.
Shabbos and the festivals accomplish tikkun in the dimension of time.
Therefore, through Shabbos one is able to find the holiness that existed in the Mishkan and the Bais Hamikdash.
Because space and time are interlinked, the kedushah once accessed through the Mishkan (space) can now be attained through Shabbos (time) — crucial for the era after the Mikdash's destruction.
And it is written "to the eunuchs (sarisim) who keep My Shabbosos… I will give them in My house and within My walls [a memorial and a name]…" (Yeshayahu 56:4-5).
The pasuk promises those called "sarisim" who keep Shabbos a place and name within Hashem's house.
The explanation: in galus they are called "sarisim," as stated in the Midrash Eichah, for in the Bais Hamikdash Bnei Yisrael would join themselves to Hashem and produce "offspring (toldos)," as it is said regarding the Mishkan that it was the "fruitfulness and multiplying" of Bnei Yisrael; see there in "the chamber of the beds (cheder hamitos)."
In the time of the Mikdash, Bnei Yisrael's intimate bond with Hashem was "fruitful," producing spiritual offspring; in galus, lacking the Mikdash, they are likened to "sarisim" (the childless) who cannot produce such offspring.
And in exile we are called "sarisim."
Without the Mikdash, we in galus are in the state of the "barren," lacking that fruitful connection.
Nevertheless, through Shabbos and through yearning (teshukah), as it is written "and they choose that which I desire" (Yeshayahu 56:4), these generations too have a grasp on the root of the Bais Hamikdash — "in My house and within My walls… better than sons and daughters" (Yeshayahu 56:5).
Even in galus, by keeping Shabbos and yearning for Hashem, our generations can still grasp the root of the Bais Hamikdash; the pasuk promises such "sarisim" a portion in Hashem's house "better than sons and daughters" — a connection surpassing even the fruitfulness of the Mikdash era.
Summary: The word "ach" teaches that even the holy labor of the Mishkan does not override Shabbos, because Shabbos grants direct, unmediated access to kedushah — it is itself an "os," a sign between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael, just as tefillin are unnecessary on Shabbos. "Ach" also hints at pre-Shabbos purification (the mikvah), stripping off the garment of physicality; but Shabbos itself drives away the sitra achra and clothes one in garments of holiness (the theme of "vehachalitzeinu"), a foretaste of olam haba. While each mitzvah rectifies one limb, Shabbos (like tzitzis) rectifies the whole person. Since the dimensions of space, time, and soul are interlinked, the holiness once found through the Mishkan (space) can now be attained through Shabbos (time) — so that even in galus, when we are like "sarisim" lacking the Mikdash, Shabbos and yearning give us a grasp on the root of the Bais Hamikdash.
