Sanctity Breaking Through Barriers
Hanukkah · Beit HaMikdash · Holiness · Greek Exile · Spiritual Light
In the name of my master, of blessed memory, regarding the mitzvah of the Chanukah lights placed outside.
The Sefat Emet cites his teacher concerning the halakhah that Chanukah lights are set toward the public domain, signaling outward revelation of holiness.
For the Greeks acted with great brazenness, breaching the walls of the Temple and defiling the oils of the Sanctuary, and they sought to turn the private domain into a public domain.
The Greek assault aimed to erase distinctions of holiness, transforming the sacred inner domain into common space.
In response, the Holy One, blessed be He, took vengeance upon them and caused holiness to be revealed even within the public domain.
Measure for measure: since they pushed defilement outward, God pushed holiness outward, revealing divine light where it normally would not shine.
And this is the meaning of “You delivered the impure into the hands of the pure.”
The victory itself expressed the reversal—the profane was subdued by the holy.
And so the ultimate purpose of all the kingdoms is to extract the ‘Belaam’ from their mouths, as it is written: “A time… when one person rules over another to his detriment,” referring to the wicked person, as explained in the Zohar.
The Sefat Emet teaches that oppressive powers ultimately expose and expel their own inner corruption, revealing the emptiness of their domination.
And since the Temple was prepared for the children of Israel, and they breached its wall to cast their gaze upon that to which they had no connection, therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, granted us added illumination from the Temple, that it shine into the domain where they hold power, to break the iron wall of the Other Side so that it should not separate Israel from their Father in Heaven.
The outward lighting of the menorah signifies a divine overflow that breaks spiritual barriers, countering foreign intrusion by extending holiness into places previously dominated by impurity.
The Sefat Emet interprets Chanukah as God’s counter-move to the Greeks’ attempt to profane sacred space: holiness is pushed outward, breaching the realm of impurity and ensuring no barrier separates Israel from divine presence.
