The sukkah as rectification of place
In the mitzvah of the sukkah is the rectification of "place" (makom).
The Sefas Emes presents the sukkah as the means of sanctifying the dimension of space, one of the three axes of creation.
For there are [the three dimensions of] olam, shanah, nefesh — space, time, and soul.
Following Sefer Yetzirah, all of creation unfolds along three axes: world (place), year (time), and soul (person).
And in each of them there is something set apart for Bnei Yisrael.
In every one of these three dimensions Hashem designated a special holy "portion" for Yisrael.
In time, there are special appointed times — Shabbosos and Yamim Tovim — which are an os (sign) for Bnei Yisrael, and they are the penimiyus (inner essence) of time.
Within the dimension of time, Shabbos and the festivals serve as Yisrael's sign and constitute the inner, holy core of time itself.
And in the soul, [the sign is] the os of milah (circumcision) and tefillin.
Within the dimension of the person, the bris milah and tefillin are the signs that mark a Jew's body and being as set apart for holiness.
And in space, it is Eretz Yisrael and the Bais HaMikdash.
Within the dimension of place, the Land of Israel and the Mikdash are the designated holy locus.
And in galus we have only the mitzvah of sukkah — the dwelling and the place that Hashem set apart for us.
In exile, with Eretz Yisrael and the Mikdash unavailable, the sukkah remains the one consecrated "place" Hashem has given us in the dimension of space.
And in every place where Bnei Yisrael are set apart in the penimiyus designated for them, the kedushah is revealed to them.
Wherever Yisrael separate themselves to their inner holy portion, kedushah becomes manifest, regardless of physical location.
As it is written: "In every place where I cause My Name to be mentioned [I will come to you and bless you]" (Shemos 20:21).
The pasuk teaches that Hashem's presence rests not on a single fixed spot alone but in any place where His Name is invoked.
And so too regarding Shabbos: "it is a Shabbos to Hashem in all your dwelling places" (Vayikra 23:3).
Shabbos's holiness, too, is drawn down specifically within the dwelling places of Yisrael, wherever they reside.
And it is a wondrous thing that the kedushah of Shabbos is revealed only within the dwelling places of Bnei Yisrael.
Remarkably, the sanctity of Shabbos manifests specifically where Jews dwell — holiness in time is bound to the holy "place" of a Jewish home.
And so too: "And Bnei Yisrael shall keep the Shabbos… throughout their generations" (Shemos 31:16).
The guarding of Shabbos is entrusted specifically to Yisrael across all generations, for they are its carriers.
For kedushah cannot spread in this world except within the dwelling of Bnei Yisrael.
Holiness can take hold in the physical world only through the medium of a Jewish dwelling that is set apart for it.
Therefore upon the sukkah, in which Bnei Yisrael set themselves apart, the Name of Heaven rests [and see what I wrote further on, in Parshas Noach, concerning this].
Because in the sukkah Yisrael withdraw into a space dedicated entirely to Hashem, the Divine Name comes to rest upon that dwelling — making the sukkah the rectification of "place" even in galus.
Summary: Creation runs along three axes — olam, shanah, nefesh (space, time, soul) — and in each Hashem gave Yisrael a holy portion: in time, Shabbos and Yom Tov; in the soul, milah and tefillin; in space, Eretz Yisrael and the Bais HaMikdash. The mitzvah of sukkah is the tikkun of the dimension of place, and in galus it is the one consecrated dwelling Hashem set apart for us. Since kedushah can spread in this world only through a dwelling that Yisrael set apart for Hashem, the Divine Name comes to rest upon the sukkah, where Bnei Yisrael withdraw to their inner, holy portion.
