Nega'im as a guarding of holiness
Tzaraas · Nega'im · Penimiyus · Four kingdoms · Shemiras hakedushah
In the Midrash: "Punishments are prepared for the scoffers (leitzim)..." (Mishlei 19:29).
The Midrash opens by citing a verse about judgments awaiting the scoffers — the springboard for the discussion of nega'im.
A parable of a matron... the nega'im (plagues) are for the nations of the world (umos ha'olam)...
The Midrash brings a parable comparing the affliction of tzaraas, suggesting that nega'im in their root belong to the nations rather than to Yisrael.
And it requires explanation.
The Sefas Emes notes that the Midrash's meaning is not obvious and needs to be unpacked.
Further in the Midrash: "se'eis, sapachas, baheres, tzaraas" — these are the four kingdoms (arba malchuyos) — see there.
Another Midrash reads the four types of skin affliction as alluding to the four exiles/kingdoms that oppress Yisrael.
And the matter is, as it is written, "Be careful (hishamer) regarding the plague of tzaraas, to guard very much..." (Devarim 24:8).
The key word is "guard" — the Torah's language about tzaraas is one of careful guarding, which the Sefas Emes will explain as protective.
That is, the nega'im are a guarding (shemirah) for the penimiyus (inner essence), so that no refuse (psoles) becomes mingled in it.
The nega is not merely a punishment but a protective seal that walls off a person's inner holiness so that impurity cannot contaminate it.
And just as with Klal Yisrael, when they are separated (nivdalim) from the nations, the kedushah is revealed in them.
On the national level, holiness shines forth in Yisrael precisely when they remain distinct and separate from the nations.
And when they were scattered in galus.
In exile, dispersed among the nations, their situation changes.
The kedushah cannot be revealed.
When intermingled among the nations in galus, Yisrael's inner holiness is unable to come to light.
Therefore Chazal said, "converts (gerim) are as hard for Yisrael as a sapachas (a skin affliction)" (Yevamos 47b).
Chazal's comparison of converts to a sapachas reflects this principle — that mixing in from outside can dim the revelation of Yisrael's holiness.
For through the gerim the revelation of kedushah is diminished.
An influx of converts, not fully refined, lessens the clarity with which holiness can shine in the nation.
For not everyone who wishes to take the Name may come and take it (compare Berachos 16b–17a).
Not anyone who desires it can simply assume the holy status of Yisrael; it is not freely available to all.
And likewise in the individual person: when some refuse (psoles) becomes mingled in him, the ruach hakodesh (spirit of holiness) withdraws.
On the personal level too, when impurity mixes into a person, the holy spirit departs from him.
And a nega and its quarantine (sgiro) are made, so that the kedushah within him should not be revealed to a place where it is not needed.
The nega and the resulting quarantine serve to seal off the person's remaining holiness, preventing it from leaking out to where it does not belong.
And this is the guarding of the kedushah; therefore it is written, "Be careful... to guard."
The whole institution of nega'im is ultimately a safeguarding of holiness, which is why the Torah frames it in language of "guarding."
For it is the guarding of the person.
The nega in fact protects the person himself, preserving the holiness he still has.
It emerges that the nega'im are only for the sake of the resha'im (the wicked), so that they should not derive benefit from that light which rests upon Yisrael, that it should not spread outward.
The real function of the affliction is to keep the inner light of Yisrael from spilling outward where the wicked could draw illicit benefit from it.
And the guarding is by means of the nega.
The nega itself is the mechanism of this protective sealing.
And so they said that the nega'im come upon one who enters a domain that is not his — from Uziyahu, who entered to make use of the kehunah (priesthood) — and it is all one matter, as above.
King Uziyahu was struck with tzaraas for usurping the kohen's role; this confirms that nega'im come to bar someone from a holiness that is not properly his — the same principle of guarding.
And when all four kingdoms (arba malchuyos) are nullified, and "Hashem alone will be exalted" (Yeshayahu 2:11).
In the future, when the four exilic kingdoms are abolished and Hashem alone is exalted, the situation will change entirely.
They will not need the nega'im.
With no hostile "outside" remaining, there will be no need for the protective walling-off of the nega'im.
And the kedushah will be revealed in completeness (sheleimus), as is written, "and your Teacher will no longer hide Himself (yikanef)" (Yeshayahu 30:20).
In that time the holiness will shine forth fully and openly, with nothing concealing it any longer.
Summary: The nega'im of tzaraas are not merely a punishment but a guarding (shemirah) of holiness — sealing off a person's inner kedushah when impurity has mingled in, so that the light resting upon Yisrael does not spill outward where the wicked could draw benefit from it. As Yisrael's holiness is revealed only when they stay separate from the nations, so the four afflictions correspond to the four exilic kingdoms; and when those kingdoms are nullified and Hashem alone is exalted, nega'im will no longer be needed and holiness will shine forth completely.
