Purified Through Exile's Trials
בפסוק כלה גרש יגרש כו'.
“In the verse: ‘He shall surely drive you out…’”
The Sefat Emet begins by focusing on the phrase emphasizing complete removal.
פי' שלא ישאר בהם ליכלוך מן הגלות כאשר ראינו שנתהפכו מיד להיות נק' צבאות ה' [וכ' כשש מאות כו' עיין בזוה"ק שמדמה אותם הכ' למלאכי עליון].
He explains: no trace of the impurity of exile was to remain in them, as we see that they immediately became called “the hosts of the Lord” (about six hundred thousand; see the Zohar, which compares this number to supernal angels).
The exodus required a total spiritual cleansing so that Israel could instantly rise to the level of divine “hosts,” a status the Zohar links to angelic purity.
וזה שבחן של ישראל שמתברר ע"י הגלות בהיותם נשארים בתמותם.
And this is the praise of Israel: they are clarified through exile by remaining in their innocence.
Exile serves as a crucible that reveals Israel’s essential integrity, proving that their core remains untouched.
וע"ז נא' כאהלי קדר כיריעות שלמה פרש"י קלה אני להתכבס כו'.
Thus it is said: “Like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon,” and Rashi explains: “I am easy to launder…”
Even if externally darkened like the tents of Kedar, Israel is easily restored to inner radiance like Solomon’s curtains.
אל תראוני כו' ששזפתני השמש כו'.
“Do not look upon me… for the sun has scorched me…”
The suffering of exile affects the outer appearance but not the inner essence.
ומכל גלות ניתוסף העדות על בנ"י שכל גלות הוא כמו נסיון לברר שבנ"י אין משתנים מפנימיות שלהן.
And from every exile further testimony is added that each exile is a test proving that Israel does not change in their inner being.
Each historical exile becomes additional evidence of Israel’s enduring spiritual identity.
וממילא כשיצאו נקיים ניתוסף להם קישוטין ממה שהיו מתלכלכין בגלות ואעפ"כ נתכבסו אח"כ.
Thus, when they emerge clean, new adornments are added to them, corresponding to what became soiled in exile and was afterward washed clean.
The challenges of exile not only fail to diminish Israel—they ultimately beautify and elevate them.
וזה ענין וישאלו כו' כלי כסף כו' שע"ז נאמר תורי זהב נעשה כו' כמ"ש במ"א [והמשך הכ' שעי"ז שכלה גרש כו' לכן יכולין להוציא כלי כסף וזהב. כי אם הי' נשאר בהם קצת פסולת לא היו יכולין ליקח מהם כלים ושמלות כנ"ל].
This is the meaning of “and they requested… vessels of silver…” about which it is said, “we will make you ornaments of gold,” as explained elsewhere. Since they were completely driven out, they were able to take silver and gold vessels; for had any impurity remained in them, they would not have been able to take these garments and vessels.
The material treasures taken from Egypt reflect the spiritual treasures attained—possible only because Israel had been fully purified.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the complete expulsion from Egypt enabled a complete inner purification. Exile reveals Israel’s unchanging essence, and each ordeal ultimately becomes spiritual adornment, symbolized by the treasures taken at the exodus.
