Revealing Israel's Hidden Inner Form
בפסוק ויאמינו כו' אז ישיר כו'.
“In the verse ‘And they believed… then Moses sang…’.”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting the connection between belief and the eruption of song at the sea.
כבר כ' במ"א פי' המדרש שלחיך פרדס רמונים כו' ע"ש המשל למי שמכר שדה ובו גל של צרורות והלוקח הסיר הגל ומצא תחתיו כמה סגולות ע"ש.
“It was already written elsewhere regarding the Midrash ‘Your shoots are an orchard of pomegranates,’ with the parable of a man who sold a field with a mound of stones, and the buyer removed the mound and found treasures beneath it.”
The Rebbe recalls an earlier teaching: exile covers over inner treasures just as stones hide precious items beneath them.
ובארנו כי בהיות בנ"י במצרים לא הי' בכחם להוציא מכח אל הפועל הפנימיות שנטע הקב"ה בהם.
“We explained that when Israel was in Egypt, they lacked the ability to bring into actuality the inner potential God had planted within them.”
Slavery suppressed their spiritual identity; their inner holiness could not yet emerge.
ואז היו בחי' גן נעול.
“Then they were in the state of a ‘locked garden.’”
Their souls were sealed, inaccessible even to themselves.
וזה הי' עיקר הגלות כענין שנא' הוציאה ממסגר נפשי להודות כו'.
“And this was the essence of the exile, as in ‘Bring my soul out of confinement so that I may praise You.’”
Exile means spiritual imprisonment—being unable to express praise.
כי בנ"י נבראו רק להעיד על הש"י. כמ"ש עם זו יצרתי לי תהלתי יספרו.
“For Israel was created only to testify to God, as it is written: ‘This people I formed for Myself that they may declare My praise.’”
Their entire purpose is to reveal divine truth.
אך זו הצורה הפנימיות השלימה. לא הי' עדיין מתוקן לראוי.
“But this complete inner form was not yet perfected as it should be.”
They possessed the potential, but it awaited awakening.
ואחר יצ"מ נעשו פרדס רמונים כו'.
“After the Exodus they became an orchard of pomegranates.”
Their inner faculties blossomed openly.
והלא אין שכל אנושי מבין זאת.
“Human intellect cannot grasp this.”
Their sudden transformation defies ordinary explanation.
אחר עבודת הפרך כמה שנים. ותיכף כשיצאו שרו כולם שירה כזאת למעלה מכל הנביאים.
“After years of crushing labor, immediately upon leaving they all sang a song surpassing that of all prophets.”
The leap from slave to prophet was instantaneous.
אין זאת רק שנתעלו נפשותיהם ונתלבשו בלבוש קודש.
“This is only because their souls were elevated and clothed in holy garments.”
A divine awakening dressed them in spiritual clarity.
מה שהי' נסתר מהם בהיותם ת"י מצרים.
“What had been hidden from them while under Egypt’s defilement.”
The impurities of Egypt had concealed their true nature.
וכל זה זכו ע"י האמונה.
“All this they merited through faith.”
Faith was the catalyst that unlocked their inner holiness.
והגם שראו כל הנסים. ומה הי' להם להאמין.
“And although they saw all the miracles—what need was there for faith?”
Seeing does not eliminate the need for inner surrender.
אכן העיקר שיהי' כל האדם נתבטל אל הנס.
“The main thing is that the whole person be nullified before the miracle.”
Faith means letting the miracle transform one’s being.
והרי אנו כולנו יודעין ומאמינים בכל הנסים שעשה עמנו הש"י.
“For we all know and believe in the miracles God performed for us.”
Knowledge alone is insufficient for transformation.
ועכ"ז אם הי' האמונה מאירה באמת לא הי' באפשרות לשכוח.
“Yet if faith truly shone within us, it would be impossible to forget.”
True faith is unforgettable and ever-present.
ומכ"ש לחטוא בשום דיבור מעשה ומחשבה.
“All the more so to sin in speech, action, or thought.”
Sin is evidence of diminished faith.
הא למדת שאין זו אמונה שלימה.
“Thus you learn that this is not complete faith.”
Our belief is partial, not fully illuminated.
והכתוב מעיד עליהם ויאמינו בה' כמו ותקעתיו יתד במקום נאמן.
“Scripture testifies of them: ‘They believed in God,’ like ‘I will fasten him as a peg in a secure place.’”
Their faith was firm, anchored.
ואז באו לבחי' מאמינים בני מאמינים שנק' בנ"י.
“Then they reached the level of ‘believers, the children of believers,’ called Israel.”
Faith became their essential identity.
וכפי חוזק האמונה כך רואין האמת.
“According to the strength of faith, so is truth perceived.”
Faith opens the eyes to divine reality.
דאיתא במד' וצדיק באמונתו יחי'. אפי' צדיקו של עולם באמונתו יחי'.
“As the Midrash says on ‘A righteous one lives by his faith’—even the greatest righteous one lives by his faith.”
Faith is the spiritual lifeline for all.
פי' שכך סידר הקב"ה אשר הנהגה שלו יתגלה לכ"א כפי האמונה כך מקבל חיות מחי החיים.
“Meaning: God arranged that His governance is revealed to each person according to their faith, and thus they receive vitality from the Living One.”
Faith determines the degree of divine illumination one receives.
והנה הם האמינו מה שיעשה הקב"ה עמנו בכל הדורות.
“And they believed in what God would do for us in all generations.”
Their faith extended beyond their own moment.
ולכן נגלה להם ברוה"ק כל מה שיהי'.
“Therefore everything that would be was revealed to them through holy inspiration.”
Prophecy flowed from their elevated faith.
ואמרו שירה על הכל.
“And they sang a song about everything.”
Their song encompassed past and future salvation.
דאיתא בלאה שקראה שם יהודה הפעם אודה. שנטלתי יותר על חלקי. משמע שקודם שקיבל המגיע לו לא שייך הודאה.
“As it is taught about Leah when she named Judah ‘This time I will thank,’ meaning she received more than her portion; implying that before receiving one’s share, thanksgiving is not applicable.”
Normally gratitude follows fulfillment.
והקב"ה הבטיח לאבות להכניסם לא"י ועדיין לא נכנסו. ואיך אמרו שירה.
“And God promised the Patriarchs to bring them into the Land, yet they had not entered—so how could they sing?”
They praised before fulfillment—contrary to expectation.
לכן כתיב ויאמינו אז ישיר.
“Therefore it is written: ‘They believed—then they sang.’”
Faith itself enabled song before realization.
שע"י שהי' האמונה מאירה אצלם כאילו בעין רואים שהקב"ה מכניסם לא"י.
“Because faith shone for them as if with their eyes they saw God bringing them into the Land.”
Faith granted the clarity of sight.
כמ"ש מכון לשבתך פעלת כו'.
“As it says: ‘The place of Your dwelling You have prepared…’”
They spoke of the future as already accomplished.
וכמו שהם בכח אמונה על להבא אמרו שירה.
“And just as they sang about the future through the power of faith…”
Their song transcended time.
כמו כן אנו כפי האמונה בכל יום במה שעשה הקב"ה הנסים לשעבר.
“So too can we, according to our faith each day, concerning the miracles God performed in the past.”
Faith connects us to past salvations.
יכולין להתדבק בשירה הזאת.
“We can attach ourselves to this song.”
The Song at the Sea is eternally accessible.
כי השירה הוא כולל מה שהי' ומה שיהי'.
“For the song includes what was and what will be.”
Shirat HaYam contains the totality of redemption—past and future.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s sudden prophetic song at the sea emerged from a luminous faith that unlocked their inner divine potential. Faith reveals truth, enables gratitude even before fulfillment, and connects us to salvation across all generations. The Song at the Sea remains accessible whenever faith brings past and future into present awareness.
