Purity refined through exile and trial

And in the Midrash on Chukas: "Who can bring a pure thing out of an impure one?" (Iyov 14:4)
The Midrash asks how purity can ever emerge from impurity — the very paradox at the heart of the parah adumah (red heifer) and of spiritual growth.
Avraham from Terach, Yisrael from the nations, the World to Come from this world — see there.
The Midrash lists examples of purity drawn out of impurity: Avraham emerged from his idolatrous father Terach, Yisrael from among the nations, and Olam Haba is earned out of this world.
Further: "The words of Hashem are pure words, silver… refined sevenfold…" (Tehillim 12:7).
Just as silver is purified through repeated refining in fire, so spiritual purity is achieved through a process of testing and refinement.
For behold, Hashem arranged that one merits taharah (purity) through the trial and the refining in this world.
Hashem designed this world so that purity is not handed over freely but earned through nisayon (test) and the refining crucible of life's hardships.
Therefore Bnei Yisrael were in Mitzrayim, in the iron crucible, and they sank into the forty-nine gates of impurity, until they merited to come out from there to acquire purity — pure from impure.
The bondage in Egypt was a refining furnace; precisely by descending into the depths of impurity and being drawn out, Bnei Yisrael acquired a purity that could only be won that way.
And so it is in every galus (exile).
Every exile functions as such a crucible, refining Bnei Yisrael toward a purity that emerges from the very impurity of their surroundings.
And this is what it means, "Yisrael from the nations" — the intent is not that they came forth from them, for that was already stated with "Avraham from Terach."
The phrase "Yisrael from the nations" is not merely repeating that they descended from idolaters; that point was already made with Avraham and Terach.
Rather, that specifically through the exile among the nations they merit purity.
The deeper meaning is that the very experience of being exiled among the nations is the refining process by which Bnei Yisrael attain their purity.
And likewise they merit the World to Come through the toil in this world.
So too, Olam Haba is earned specifically through the effort and struggle expended in this world.
Therefore, before they were redeemed in Nissan, they merited purity, becoming a new creation, in the spirit of what is said, "Create for me a pure heart, O Elokim." (Tehillim 51:12)
Just before the redemption from Egypt, Bnei Yisrael attained purity and were reborn as a "new creation" with a pure heart, fit for geulah (redemption).
And so it is every year, for every Shabbos is a remembrance of yetzias Mitzrayim (the Exodus), as written elsewhere, that one merits to go out from the gates of impurity to the gates of purity each and every Shabbos.
This pattern recurs weekly: each Shabbos, as a remembrance of the Exodus, lifts a person from the gates of impurity into the gates of purity.
And at the end of the year they merit purity, and afterward the redemption of Mitzrayim on Pesach, as it is written, "And the Bnei Yisrael went up chamushim…" (Shemos 13:18) — [read as] fifty.
As the year culminates, Bnei Yisrael attain purity and then redemption at Pesach; the word "chamushim" is read as alluding to fifty, the fiftieth gate.
That they entered the fifty gates of binah (understanding).
Having been refined, they ascended into the fiftieth gate of binah — the highest level of understanding granted at the redemption.
For purity is a gift from Heaven, and according to the toil and the trial one merits it.
Ultimate purity is bestowed from Above as a gift, yet it is granted in measure to the effort and testing a person has endured.
Therefore they hinted in the Midrash that the "perfect red heifer" alludes to the kingdoms — Mitzrayim, Bavel, Yavan, and so on.
The Midrash reads the red heifer as a symbol of the successive exiles and oppressing kingdoms through which Bnei Yisrael pass.
Meaning that from all these exiles we will merit the complete purity in the time to come.
Each exile is part of the refining process, and through all of them together Bnei Yisrael will ultimately attain perfect, complete purity in the future redemption.
Summary: Drawing on "Who can bring purity from impurity," the Sefas Emes explains that Hashem designed the world so that taharah is earned specifically through nisayon and refinement. Bnei Yisrael acquired purity by descending into Egypt's impurity and being drawn out — a pattern that repeats in every exile, every Shabbos, and every year. Purity is a heavenly gift granted in proportion to one's toil, and through all the exiles symbolized by the red heifer, Bnei Yisrael will reach complete purity in the future redemption.
