Purity precedes the Nissan renewal

קבעו חז"ל לקרות פרשת פרה קודם ניסן.

Chazal established that we read Parshas Parah (the portion of the Red Heifer) before Nissan.

The Sages set the reading of Parah in the weeks leading into the month of Nissan, and the Sefas Emes asks what the timing teaches us.

כי כמו שיורד בניסן התחדשות לבנ"י כמו כן יורד מקודם טהרה לנפשות בני ישראל.

For just as in Nissan a renewal descends upon Bnei Yisrael, so too, beforehand, a taharah (purity) descends upon the souls of Bnei Yisrael.

Nissan brings a fresh influx of spiritual renewal. But before that gift can be received, Hashem first sends down a wave of purity to ready the souls of the people.

כי הכל מאתו ית'.

For everything is from Him.

Both the purity and the renewal are gifts that flow from Hashem; a person does not generate them on his own but receives them from Above.

ובימים אלו שכל בנ"י טיהרו עצמם קודם הבאת קרבן פסח. מסוגלים הימים בעצמם למצוא רוח טהרה.

And in these days, when all of Bnei Yisrael purified themselves before bringing the Korban Pesach, the days themselves are uniquely suited (mesugalim) for finding a spirit of purity.

Historically, this pre-Pesach period was when every Jew underwent purification in order to be fit to offer the Korban Pesach. That collective purification left a lasting imprint, so the days themselves carry a special readiness for attaining taharah.

ופרשה זו של דין טהרת מת. המייגעים בה יכולין לבוא לטהרה.

And this portion, dealing with the law of purification from contact with the dead — those who toil in it can come to purity.

Even without the actual ashes of the Parah Adumah today, immersing oneself in the laborious study of these laws of taharah is itself a path to becoming pure.

וכתיב וזרקתי עליכם מים טהורים כו'.

And it is written: "And I will sprinkle upon you pure waters…" (Yechezkel 36:25).

The navi promises a future purification in which Hashem Himself will sprinkle purifying waters upon Bnei Yisrael — a guarantee that purity will be granted to them.

ומאחר שבניסן עתידין לגאול ממילא בודאי מקודם הגאולה יתן השי"ת רוח טהרה בלבות בנ"י.

And since in Nissan they are destined to be redeemed, it follows that certainly, before the geulah (redemption), Hashem will place a spirit of purity in the hearts of Bnei Yisrael.

Just as the original Exodus required prior purification, so too the future geulah, which tradition teaches will come in Nissan, must be preceded by Hashem instilling a spirit of taharah in the hearts of the people.

לכן מסוגלים אלה הימים שהיה בהם הטהרה ושיהי' בהם הטהרה למצוא בהם גם עתה לב טהור כמ"ש במ"א כי כל עניני הקדושה נשאר מהם ברכה לאחרי'.

Therefore these days — in which there was purity in the past and in which there will be purity in the future — are uniquely suited for finding, even now, a pure heart, as I wrote elsewhere, that from all matters of holiness a blessing remains for afterward.

Because these days held purity in the past and are destined to hold it again at the future geulah, they are charged with the power to bestow a "pure heart" even in the present. This rests on a principle the Sefas Emes teaches elsewhere: every encounter with kedushah leaves behind a lasting berachah that radiates forward in time.

ולפניה ג"כ יכולין להרגיש מעין הקדושה העתידה להיות אז:

And beforehand, too, one can feel a foretaste of the holiness that is destined to be then.

Holiness radiates not only forward from the past but also backward from the future: even before the redemptive purity arrives, one can already sense an advance taste of the kedushah that is yet to come.

Summary: Chazal placed Parshas Parah before Nissan because purity must precede renewal — just as Bnei Yisrael purified themselves before bringing the Korban Pesach and will be purified before the future geulah. These days are therefore "mesugal," charged with the power of taharah from both the purity of the past and the purity destined for the future. Toiling in the laws of purification, and tapping into this radiating holiness, lets a person attain a pure heart even now and taste in advance the kedushah of the redemption to come.
