Holiness of Right vs. Left
Mezuzah · Holiness · Nations · Torah · Lishmah
The mezuzah is on the right, and the Chanukah lamp on the left.
The Sefat Emet begins by setting the spatial symbol: mezuzah on the right, Chanukah light on the left, signaling two spiritual paths.
As it is written: “Length of days is in her right hand for those who hold fast to her, and in her left hand are wealth and honor.”
The right represents eternal spiritual life; the left represents temporal blessing.
As it says: “A thousand shall fall at your side…”
The left side is associated with the fall or distancing of those unworthy.
And the Midrash explains “yipol” as “to fall upon you,” referring to the men of Manasseh who fell in with David.
This links the verse to those who attach themselves from the outside.
The idea is that the right side is reserved only for Israel.
The right symbolizes the inner covenantal relationship.
And the closeness of the nations is only from the left side.
Nations can approach holiness only in a mediated, outer way.
Japheth had a share in holiness, yet was not like Shem, as it says: “Blessed is the Lord, the God of Shem.”
Shem has direct divine attachment, unlike Japheth.
This is the dimension of “length of days in her right,” for his intention was purely for Heaven—true “lishmah,” found only in Israel—and therefore it endures forever and is called length of days, namely Torah.
Right-side connection means eternal, purely spiritual intention.
But regarding Japheth, whose intention was not entirely for Heaven, it says “May God enlarge Japheth,” representing the left side—wealth and honor.
His blessing is external grandeur, not eternal Torah-life.
Thus his descendants had some hold, as it says: “He shall dwell in the tents of Shem.”
They receive borrowed access to holiness.
And Cyrus merited to build the Temple.
His merit comes from Japheth’s partial connection.
Yet in truth they were not suited for this and ended up causing Israel to sin.
Their proximity brought spiritual distortion.
Therefore they were ultimately pushed away when they breached the Temple; this connection was taken from them, and the holiness became clarified as belonging solely to Israel—those who hold to the left side properly.
Their misuse removed their borrowed holiness.
The Gemara says: “To those who hold it on the right, it is a potion of life; to those on the left, a potion of death.”
The two sides represent life-giving versus harmful engagement with Torah.
And this is the mezuzah on the right—the path unique to Israel.
The mezuzah symbolizes the covenantal right-side connection.
And the Chanukah lamp on the left reflects “a thousand shall fall at your side,” for the left draws near those who are worthy and distances others.
The Chanukah light sorts true attachment from false.
And the refuse is pushed away.
Only the purified remain connected.
The Gemara hints that Cyrus “spoiled” in the end when he said: “And it shall be for the life of the king and his sons,” showing his intention was not for Heaven.
His self-interest revealed the limitation of his holiness.
All their power stemmed from this, and therefore now additional protection has been given to us also from the left side.
Chanukah light completes the protective circle, guarding even the outer boundary.
The Sefat Emet teaches that right symbolizes eternal, inner holiness found only in Israel, while left symbolizes mediated, external access available to the nations. Chanukah lights on the left clarify and protect this boundary, drawing near what is worthy and discarding what is not.
