מצות חנוכה נר איש וביתו.
The mitzvah of Ḥanukkah is: a light for each man and his household.
The Sefat Emet begins by highlighting that the core of Ḥanukkah is tied to the home itself, not only the individual. The miracle expresses itself through the household structure of Israel.
שהארת הנס בימים אלו מאיר בנפשות בנ"י ובמקומותיהם.
For the radiance of the miracle in these days shines into the souls of Israel and into their dwelling places.
The miracle of Ḥanukkah is not only historical; its light spiritually illuminates both the inner life and the physical spaces of the Jewish people.
לאשר אותן הרשעים רצו לטמא נפשות בנ"י וגם דירותיהם.
Because those wicked ones sought to defile the souls of Israel and also their dwellings.
The Greek decrees targeted both spiritual identity and the sanctity of Jewish homes; therefore the repair must reach both dimensions.
ופרצו י"ג פרצות במקדש.
And they breached thirteen openings in the Temple.
The physical breaches symbolize attempts to disrupt holiness at its source, further emphasizing the need for restoration of sanctity.
ולכן כשנעשה הישועה נשאר הארה בנפש ובמקום לכן המצוה על פתח הבית.
Therefore, when the salvation occurred, a radiance remained in both the soul and the place; thus the mitzvah is at the entrance of the home.
The doorway becomes the meeting point of inner and outer holiness—reflecting the dual healing of person and place achieved through the miracle.
ונתוסף שמירה מנ"ח על הפתח לבד המזוזה.
And additional protection from Ḥanukkah is added at the entrance, alongside the mezuzah.
The Ḥanukkah light strengthens the doorway’s spiritual guarding, complementing but distinct from the mezuzah’s protection.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the miracle of Ḥanukkah repairs both the souls and dwelling places of Israel, countering the defilement sought by the Greeks. Thus the mitzvah centers on the doorway, where a special protective light remains.
