Shabbos plants yearning for Hashem
Further, on the verse "Yet (ach) My Shabbosos you shall keep" (Shemos 31:13).
The Sefas Emes will expound the limiting word "ach" (yet/only) and what it teaches about the avodah of keeping Shabbos.
Every Jew must, all his days, be one who guards and awaits the revelation of holiness and the glory of Hashem in the world.
The constant posture of a Jew is to watch and long for Hashem's holiness to become revealed within this world.
And this is the aspect of Shabbos, for on Shabbos holiness is revealed.
Shabbos is the time when the hidden kedushah breaks into the open, so longing for that revelation is itself the inner essence of Shabbos.
And Bnei Yisrael are called shomrei Shabbos (keepers of Shabbos), as it is written: "And you shall guard… for it is holy to you" (Shemos 31:14).
The title "keepers of Shabbos" expresses that holiness genuinely belongs to them.
That is: because holiness is intrinsic to Bnei Yisrael, therefore they are keepers of Shabbos.
Their guarding of Shabbos flows from the kedushah already rooted in their essence — they protect what is truly their own.
However, the meaning of "ach" (yet/only):
The Sefas Emes now turns to the deeper sense of the limiting word "ach."
It is that there should be no other ratzon (desire) or concern for Bnei Yisrael in the world —
The word "only" demands an exclusive focus: nothing else should occupy a Jew's deepest will.
— but only to guard the Shabbos.
The single all-encompassing aim is to await and protect the revelation of holiness that Shabbos brings.
This is the level of the tzaddikim and of the generation of Moshe Rabbeinu, who had no other concern except to guard the Shabbosos of Hashem.
That total singularity of purpose belonged to the great tzaddikim and to the dor de'ah, the generation of the wilderness.
And in truth this itself is "a sign… to know…" (Shemos 31:13).
This very devotion is the "sign between Me and you" by which it is known that Hashem sanctifies Israel.
For people who dwell in this physical world and nevertheless have no other concern in it, but all their thoughts roam through the upper worlds —
To live bodily in the material world yet have every thought soaring in higher realms is an extraordinary spiritual state.
— surely of them it is said: "You are My witnesses" (Yeshayahu 43:10).
Such people testify, by their very lives, to the reality and holiness of Hashem in the world.
Yet even we, the lowly, who have not reached this level — it is written: "And Bnei Yisrael shall guard the Shabbos" (Shemos 31:16).
Even those far from that lofty madreigah are still addressed by the mitzvah and included in the keeping of Shabbos.
Even though we do not cleave to this constantly,
We cannot sustain unbroken attachment to holiness as the tzaddikim do.
nevertheless there are within it (within Shabbos) set times and desires to yearn to cleave to His holiness.
Shabbos awakens in us at least moments of genuine longing to bond with Hashem's kedushah, even if not a constant state.
And this too is testimony and a sign that this world is distant from, and inverted relative to, the upper world.
The very fact that we can only reach such longing in fleeting moments testifies how far and how upside-down this world is compared to the world above.
And Bnei Yisrael who merit to have the ratzon at certain occasions and times —
That Jews can at least at fixed times feel this holy desire is itself precious.
— this is a sign to know "that I, Hashem, sanctify you" (Shemos 31:13).
The awakening of yearning within us proves that our holiness is granted from above, that Hashem Himself sanctifies us.
And it is through the power of Shabbos that this yearning is found within us.
Shabbos is the wellspring that plants the longing for closeness to Hashem inside every Jew.
This is the meaning of "Six days… and on the seventh He rested and was refreshed (va-yinafash)" — Chazal expounded: once Shabbos departed, "woe (vai), the [extra] soul is lost" (Beitzah 16a).
Chazal read va-yinafash as a play: "vai, nefesh" — alas, the additional Shabbos soul is gone at Shabbos's end.
The commentators ask: what has this to do with Shabbos itself? On the contrary, this (the loss) is at the departure of Shabbos.
If the "woe" is about losing the soul, it seems to belong to motzaei Shabbos, not to the day of Shabbos described in the verse.
However, the explanation is that Shabbos deposits within Bnei Yisrael this yearning for all the weekdays.
Va-yinafash means Shabbos leaves behind a residue of soul-longing that carries through the entire workweek.
"Nefesh" denotes ratzon (desire/will).
The Sefas Emes reads nefesh here as the faculty of will and yearning.
And Shabbos grants this ratzon, as it is written: "And He formed [man]… and He breathed [into his nostrils] a breath of life, and man became a living soul (nefesh chayah)" (Bereishis 2:7).
Just as the breath of life turned formed matter into a living, yearning being, so Shabbos breathes into us renewed will and desire.
That is: Hashem made man physical and breathed the neshamah into him so that through it even the physical body would be filled with ratzon and yearning.
The soul's purpose is to infuse even the material body with a living desire to reach upward toward Hashem.
And this is the law/calling of man in the world.
Carrying that soul-given yearning into bodily life is the essential task of a human being.
Therefore He made six days, and on the seventh "rested and was refreshed (va-yinafash)" — for He deposits the ratzon and yearning within man.
The pattern of six days and Shabbos exists precisely so that the seventh day can implant in man a fresh will and longing to draw on through the week.
And examine this closely, for I have been brief.
The author signals that the idea is dense and invites the reader to ponder it further.
Summary: A Jew's whole life is to await and guard the revelation of holiness, which is the essence of Shabbos. The word "ach" demands the tzaddikim's exclusive devotion, yet even ordinary Jews are granted, through Shabbos, fixed times of genuine yearning for Hashem — itself the "sign" that He sanctifies us. Reading va-yinafash as "soul/will," Shabbos breathes into us a living ratzon and teshukah that we carry into all the weekdays, fulfilling the soul's mission to fill even the body with longing for Hashem.
