Yaakov's ladder and the inner point of yearning
In the Midrash on "And he dreamed" etc.: "My soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You… so in the holy place I beheld You."
The Midrash links Yaakov's dream to the verse of yearning for Hashem — teaching that what one beholds in holiness corresponds to one's thirst for Him.
For Chazal said: just as it is impossible to have grain without straw, so it is impossible to have a dream without idle matters.
Even a true dream comes mixed with meaningless content, just as grain always grows together with chaff.
And although this dream was prophecy.
Yaakov's dream of the ladder was genuine nevuah (prophecy).
Yet there were within it distinctions, for it clothed itself in levels, as it is written: "and behold a ladder," "and behold angels," "and behold Hashem standing over it."
Even this prophecy descended through graded levels — the ladder, the angels, and at its summit Hashem Himself standing above.
And Yaakov Avinu clung only to the innermost vision — "Hashem standing over it" — and it is taught that he did not wish to ascend the ladder.
Yaakov attached himself solely to the deepest penimiyus, Hashem Himself, and declined to climb the rungs of the ladder.
For the ladder is the aspect of the weekdays, in which the conduct of the world is by means of an angel.
The ladder represents the workweek, when Hashem governs the world indirectly, through intermediary angels.
And he had deveikus (cleaving) to the inner dimension; therefore Chazal said that one who delights in the Shabbos is granted a boundless inheritance — "and I will feed you the inheritance of Yaakov" — which is above the conduct of the ladder, as it is written, "and I will mount you upon the heights of the earth."
Yaakov's deveikus to the inner point parallels the reward of oneg Shabbos: an unbounded inheritance that transcends the angel-governed order of the ladder.
And the ladder is considered like the straw relative to the grain.
Compared to the inner vision of Hashem, the whole ladder of levels is like mere chaff next to the kernel.
And so it is with all dreams, which contain an admixture, as is written in the sefarim.
Every dream blends the true with the worthless, as the holy works explain.
And according to a person's yearning throughout the day.
The measure of one's daytime longing for Hashem is decisive.
So does he cleave to the inner core of the dream.
The stronger one's daytime yearning, the more one grasps the true inner content of a dream rather than its idle husk.
And it is written, "so in the holy place I beheld You" — meaning, according to one's thirst, so does he merit to attain.
What one perceives in holiness is proportionate to the intensity of his thirst for Hashem.
And likewise, according to a person's yearning during the weekdays.
The same principle applies to the longing one builds up during the workweek.
So, when the holiness of Shabbos arrives, he merits to cleave to it.
One's deveikus on Shabbos is in proportion to the yearning he cultivated all week.
And it is written: "The wayward of heart is sated from his own ways, but the good man from what is above him."
The verse contrasts one content with his own lower ways against the good man who seeks what is higher than himself.
For the illumination of Olam Haba cannot be received in this world.
The full light of the World to Come cannot be contained within Olam Hazeh.
Nevertheless there is an illumination even in this world for the tzaddikim, which hovers over them, as it is written, "standing over it."
A radiance from above still rests upon tzaddikim in this world — hovering over them, as Hashem "stood over" Yaakov.
And so it is written, "and may the pleasantness of Hashem be upon us."
We pray that Hashem's pleasantness should rest upon us from above.
And so on Shabbos Kodesh He spreads the sukkah of peace over us, like the matter of what we say: "He who makes peace in His heights, may He make peace upon us."
On Shabbos a canopy of shalom is spread over us from above, mirroring the peace Hashem establishes in the heavens.
For above they can receive the wholeness, but regarding the lower beings it says "upon us."
The upper realms contain perfection in full; for us below, that perfection can only rest "upon" us, hovering from above.
For a person must rectify himself according to his ability, so that he draws near to having the upper illumination hover over him — and this is "the good man, from what is above him."
One must refine himself as much as he can, so the higher light will rest upon him; this is the "good man" who draws his sustenance from above.
For the tzaddikim do not desire what is near to them, but only to cleave to the supernal root — and this is the aspect of Shabbos.
Tzaddikim are not satisfied with the lower, accessible world; they reach for the upper root, which is the essence of Shabbos.
For in truth a person himself is the ladder, and within him is the inner neshamah, a portion of God from above — alluding to the aspect of "and Hashem standing over it," as above.
Man himself is the ladder rooted on earth yet reaching heaven; his inner neshamah, a piece of the Divine, is the point over which Hashem "stands."
Summary: Yaakov's dream, though prophecy, came clothed in graded levels like grain mixed with straw; he clung only to its innermost point — Hashem standing above — rather than the angel-governed ladder of the weekdays. What a person attains in holiness, in dreams, and on Shabbos all corresponds to the intensity of his yearning; man himself is the ladder, and his inner neshamah, a portion of the Divine, is the point upon which Hashem rests.
